Well...you realize the leap down rule basically works the same as a strength 10 hit in that everyone still has the same chance of dying (since you can't take armor saves from leap down either), just the die roll is kinda the opposite direction. Instead of wounding on a 2+ you'd be wounding on a 2- or maybe 3-.
Anyway, I think crash and burn works fine how it is, personally. Jumping from a falling/exploding jet would just be....ridiculous.
Oh, and you'd get
FNP from leap downs as opposed to crash and burns hit (most of the time). Increasing the survivability of a unit in an exploding aircraft that is already a little too good in the game right now is not a great idea, personally.
