Homicidal Veteran Blood Angel Assault Marine

NJ, USA

Well Gents,
I have been debating recently "combining" all my SM armies into one. Basically selling off each of my SM chapter armies and then creating a new one that has all the units and such under one color scheme. I figure in the long run it would save me the P.I.T.A of building and painting so many different SM.

My SM armies sit at currently:
- Pre-Heresy SW
- SW
- BA
- DA
- Pre-Heresy DA

Each army is a different play style. While my Pre-Heresy DA are my Vanilla SM/CSM, BA are assault heavy (basically getting mauled in 6th lately), SW are LF & GH Heavy (my winning army usually). and my Pre-Heresy SW are Terminator heavy. So basically I would take each army and change its color scheme to fit one chapter and stick with that. With that being said, what do you guys think? I mean I know there is some hate with having SW using BA codex and such, but is there a happy medium?

My current thought is to make everything Pre-Heresy DA. Majority Black armor should be easier to paint, and Pre-Heresy can allow me some cool conversions. Although I am trying to think long term and I feel their might be a bigger market for resale if I go with a more mainstream chapter.

Sorry for the long ramble.....

I think it's a great idea. I have a few different Chaos armies, and I'm thinking of rolling them into one for big games (they are separate so I can do different things with each).

As for market appeal, I wouldn't be concerned. Heresy era models have always been fairly popular. Dark Angels also still have a big appeal, so I think there will be little risk there. At the end of the day though, you should look at what makes you happy.

Another option is to do what I did with my Chaos army, although do it as loyalists. If you have a lot of bits for different Marines, you can try to figure out a way to combine them all together into a chapter of your own making. While this might seem lame, use it as a modeling and possibly writing opportunity. While alot of players make their own chapters, onyl a percentage of them are really striking and enjoyable.

Instead of selling off and buying new models (which is certainly an option) you could try and do some pauldron magic instead. I have different units painted up in their chapter's colors, but the left (right? Whichever one gets the squad markings.) one painted red with a crusade symbol painted over that. It ties the army together into a relatively cohesive whole without leaving me stuck with a single color scheme or codex to play from. Of course my problem is I tend to be lazy and glue weapons instead of magnetizing them, so I need to go about fixing that up.

Still, it's a lot less work than starting a whole new army.

That's a good idea, There are at least a few chapters that loan units and sergeants out (like the Mentor Legion). Your army could also include units from some of the smaller chapters that have been nearly wiped out, or even basically Space Marine allies. As long as everything is using the same set of rules (plus any allies detachment), you're gold.

I knew a guy that did that with his Eldar army once, every squad of Guardians and vehicle was painted up in a different scheme because it was an army formed of units on loan from a lot of different places. It's perfectly plausible, and could look pretty cool.

As a Raven Guard player, take it from me that black isn't as easy to paint as you may think. It's very easy to underhighlight and have everything look flat or overhighlight and have things look washed out or like a bad 80s vector graphic.

That's when I officially have white as a spot colour, don't know what I'd do to break up pre heresy DA black.
