Hey so my girl found dark eldar and decided to buy a army of 3k points. Now I played 40k many many years ago and not really knew much about it or liked it. But she gave fantasy a try for me and loved it so I think I should do the same.

Now after looking through them all and reading through the horus heresy I want to play chaos space marines. Now I know many of the primarch's are dead so I need some help picking one based on a few things

1: Primarch needs to be alive
2: I want to have fun painting them and paint a interesting scheme on them. "not just red with silver trim"
3: Love close combat or very long range not alot of bolters.

I need to go to work every day.

1. Pretty much any Chaos Legion EXCEPT: the Black Legion, Night Lords. All others have daemon-primarchs

2. not Black Legion unless you have some unique way to represent them. Check out the color schemes for each traitor legion as there are less than 12 to check.

3. Legions that would work: World Eaters close combat), Emperor's Children(ranged and combat), Iron Warriors (siege),

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

I don't completely understand why the Primarch still needs to be alive, for clarification none of them can be used outside of Apocalypse (and thats only a few). But if having a Primarch has nothing to do with gameplay and just a preference, then going by what your previous points I would say;

1) World Eaters. Dedicated CC nuts and Angron can be used in Apocalypse.

2) Emperor's Children. You can go absolutely crazy with these guys! Don't get fooled into thinking pink and black is these guys scheme, they can wear ANY colour combination you like, so long as its bright, clashing, garish and stimulating! Plus opens up a world of conversion opportunities if you're into that. And not a single bolter to be seen if you don't want them

3) Death Guard. Primarch's still alive, they're cool and effective, and with Typhus you can take a kick-ass zombie horde. One of the coolest options in this codex if you ask me. Colour scheme can get repetitive, but you can mix it up by taking a few schemes from the 'dex (like those the Purge). Heaps of bolters though, though Plague Marines can take 2 special weapons per 5 men, so if you really hate bolters, you can just spam 5 man squads to cut down on them.

Thats the top 3 for me. Really any other legion bar Black and Night Lords as Decio said. If you prefer the colours of Word Bearers, Thousand Sons, Iron Warriors etc, then go with them by all means!

Oh ok I check them out thanks alot guys/maybe girls.

The reason they still need a primarch is because if you are 100% loyal to someone because they are flawless then they die..... kinda blows lol.

Iron warriors seem interesting with all the seige. Also where are the rules for the zombies/hellbrutes? In a white dwarf I take it?

I need to go to work every day.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

The rules are in the new Chaos codex that came out a month or two back.

Personally I love Nurgle; not only do you get the excuse to go crazy with the weathering, but plague marines are very effective troops (they count as troops rather than elites when you take a nurgle marked HQ), but their price means that you don't need a million of them to make an army.

If you want to make a "pure" or "fluffy" Death Guard army, you will want to take lots of plague marines on foot. I use squads of 7, as 7 is the sacred number of Nurgle (though it no longer gives you any bonus in-game like it used to). As mentioned above, even the standard 5 man squad can take two special weapons, meaning you can really gear them up to kick bum.

They are all about the slow advance, grinding the enemy beneath their boots. From what I understand in 6th, this lack of vehicles in your list can be an advantage.

You also have a chance to mix up the paint scheme as anything other the foot slogging PM could be allied warbands or more recently converted forces. Hell, you can do a Nurgle army without it being Death Guard if you wanted; my Nurgle marines are quite mobile, with Raptors and Rhino transports for each squad - their colour scheme is a tribute to the Death Guard, although not exactly similar.
