Hi all, new to the forums and the game. A friend and I picked up the Khador and Cygnar battlegroups the other day and played a round. We're having a duzy of a time with the spell casting aspect of the game. As we read the rules, it seems to state that for an offensive spell to be successful, you add 2d6 plus leftover Focus remaining on the warcaster, is this correct? If it is it just kind of makes spells, atleast offensive ones, kind of useless as my friend and I are far more worried about putting focus points on the jacks for maximum damage, and with no leftover focus to add to the spell casting attempt it's usually a guaranteed fail. Not to mention the fact that the average spell requires 3 or 4 focus to cast anyway, so even if we gave none of our focus away at the beginning of the turn the spell would only get an addition 2 points to the casting roll.

Also, for an offensive spell to be successfully cast the warcaster's roll has to meet or beat the intended targets def correct?

And one final question in the order of spells. For Stryker's earthquake spell, to successfully cast it do you have to beat the intended targets defence for it to land, and then roll against every model under the template? We're just a bit confused by this as most posts we've read don't go into explicit detail of the spell, and when they do most people just tend to discuss how missing the target due to being out of range can still have the spell deviate onto some enemy models.

Clarification on these questions would be really appreciated.

I believe it's 2D6 plus your fury/focus STAT. So look at the number of initial focus you get and roll that.

So if I am using eHexeris, he has a fury stat of 7. Meaning he adds 7 to 2D6 to see if he hits.

pMorghul has a fury stat of 5. Meaning he adds 5 to 2d6 to see if he hits.

The higher your fury/focus, generally the more capable at slinging spells you are. This mechanic seems to reinforce that.

Since Earthquake is an AoE spell, anything under it is knocked down. This means that since it's an AoE spell that if you fail to hit, it will scatter. So if you hit directly or cover models after scattering the template, covered models are knocked down. The final deviation of the AoE can be greater than it's max range.

1) there is a difference between focus and FOCUS. The first is a counter that can be spent for boosting, buying attacks, ect.. The other is a stat, just like MAT or ARM. When casting spells you always use FOCUS for the attack roll.

2-3) In the case of AoE's, you make an attack roll against the target of the spell. If you ht, the model under the center is directly hit and all the others are hit, For most spells there is a difference but this is not so with earthquake. If you miss, you roll for deviation. All models under the templates final location are hit.

For future reference questions about rules, you need to post it in the Warmachine You Make Da Call forum.

I believe Stryker has a focus of 6. So when he casts an offensive spell he rolls 2d6 and adds his stat of 6.

Also worth noting that you can spend an additional focus point to boost the attacka nd roll 3d6 instead of 2. This is often worth it for those high def targets.
