I decided to play Imperial Guard a few weeks ago, but since then, I have found that the new chaos space marines have been catching my attention. They suit my painting style, they look fantastic, the play style of the army is perfect for me. CSM are just perfect, but there's a problem, and it's that I have no idea which army to choose from. You see, me and some friends are going to have a tournament, where we will play each other in a round robin. I have serious problems with armies and usually change every few weeks. At first I was going into the tournament with orks, then necrons, then dark angels, and now imperial guard. My friend who's leading the tournament said if I changed armies again, I was out of it. Therefore, I have no idea whether I should go with my head, my heart, or I should just quit the hobby altogether, and get a fantasy/LoTR army instead. Please help me, it would be much appreciated.

I know, i'm ridiculously bad at sticking with armies.

Thou shalt not refer to the Adeptus Soritas as "Bolter Biatches" nor shalt thou go anywhere near our sisters during the time of the "Red Rage," lest thou wishes to be the first human to enter orbit without the aid of a shuttle.

I know that feel, I have tried everything from Orks to Eldar. But here's my advice, stick with guard as your main army for this tourney BUT, get a lord and a couple squads of redshirts as allies and see if you like their playstyle

If you do then pick up CSM as your main army, if not stick with guard

wait, you can have csm and ig as allies?

Can.

Not very well, though.

Allies of convenience, good enough.

well that's kind of cool. I might try and make that work. Any suggestions as to how I can make it work?

The problem is they don't really synergize.

what I could have is lot's of fast assaulty csm like warp talons e.t.c, and line holding imperial guard

General life tip that will help you immensely in all things you do in life, 40k included, that I wish someone would've force-drilled into my head at 13.

PERSEVERANCE and DISCIPLINE.

Stick things out, keep on with what you desire to see done until it is well done. Don't hop around endlessly, you will end up with nothing. Perseverance and discipline is the last thing kids get taught nowdays and it's awful for them. Pick an army and stick with it. Especially with the income of a 13 year old, you'll never build up an army and you'll end up with a pitiful scattering of minis from multiple armies. Apply perseverance and discipline to all you do and you will find success. Impatience and flakiness will leave you nothing but wasted time and unsatisfied desired. Accept that you cannot have everything, that is reality. Pick the army you like most and accept that you cannot have all armies yet. You will be much happier overall.

To me, it just depends on what you like most about the hobby.

*If you enjoy the assembling and painting then you should buy whichever army you think looks the best. You may not win every match but you will have more fun painting and hopefully playing them. For example I chose Orks because I love their fluff and I think they look cool.

*If you are more concerned with winning every match and min/maxing then do some research and figure out which armies are constantly winning tournaments and buy those.

*If you have limited funds then maybe pick an army that has a small number of elite units instead of a horde army like Nids/Orks/IG.

It really just depends on why you play the game and what you want out of it.

At the end you said pick the army you like best. CSM. I will stick with them

Rock the CSM man! Give yourself a reasonable point goal, like 1k. Once you hit 1k then go for a different army if you wish but you will have an actual army to play

thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you! Thank's for setting a clear path for my future, not just in 40k. So far my life has been based on change, and now I will stop being that kind of person. Screw the tournament! Blood for the Blood GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

Woah there hold your horses. There is a perfectly reasonable way to go into the tourney and get what you want. Blindly sticking to stuff and hoping it gets better wont always work, its about finding your loves. So stick with the IG for this tournament with some allied CSM which can work fine, a khorne lord adds great extra punch to IG so just hold off on going totally chaotic and test it, so that you can know once and for all if you like them or not
