With christmas looming, I've began to think of what to get for my niece and nephew. In the true spirit of being the oddest member of my family (who without me would be a rather boring bunch but I digress), I've decided to craft either a chainmail shirt or a leather helmet for them. Being 8 and 11 respectively, it won't take too long or use up too many materials to make them something spiffy.

So which do I do?

I'm leaning more towards leather helmets, because I can put fur lining on the inside and they can wear them to school in january and february, when it might* get cold. I don't know about you guys, but if I had a leather helmet that actually looked like a fantasy esque helmet back in elementary, I would have been hot gak.

*Cold in texas. That's a joke.

Chain for the older one, and a helm for the wee bairn.

Then they can fight it out and see who gets the complete set. I like it, reminds me of my childhood.

Hah! If only there were ways to conveniently adjust the size of both. They could just sorta continue to fight over it as they grow up. Wits or brute force, the trophy for knocking your sibling down a peg is fancy armor. That sure would have inspired me to spend more time with my brother when I was younger.

Could always get them anything besides chainmail and a leather helmet, but that's not what the threads about.

Unless they planning on time travelling to the dark ages and making war I would settle on a nice coat and hat.

I like the helmets idea. They can wear them with regular clothing as amusing hats, and/or combine them with a cheap quick-and-easy tabard for medieval costume fun. A chain hauberk is going to be a ton of work for a garment the kid will outgrow very quickly.

Well I'm working with 12 guage stainless steel, so a 4 in one could be weaved pretty quickly. However, you're absolutely right about them outgrowing it pretty fast.

If it's 'real' chain mail I'd be tempted to go with that,

as a mail coat could always be opened up and enlarged as they grew (if they remained interested)

a helmet they'd just outgrow
