Hey Dakka!

I really would like to know if there are any viable special characters in the Ork codex for a mech army.

Cheers!

The only special characters that are taken (HQ wise) is Ghazghkull, and even then he is usually too expensive. Most of the time people take a regular warboss or big mek. A big mek with kff is almost always taken in a mech army as it provides a 5+ cover.

Gutsmek is a beast. Pair him up with a few ork bikers and head straight for some transports. Split him off at the last minute and use his Dakka cannon to pop side armor then assault all the while the bob bikers hot another unit.

I like ghazghkul paired with a dakkajet or two. 18 twin linked str 6 shots for two turns should put a unit down each turn.

Wazdakka allows bikers and bikes I feel are the best unit in the game for Orks but that's just me.

ghaz seems to be the most popular/useful but usually too expensive

wazdakka like others have said, is popular if you want to run normal bikers as troops

his turbo boost+dakka cannon rock

he however has to have a retinue of ablative wounds because he has no invlun save

stormboys kind of suck for their points cost, but zagstruk is the only reason to bring them. Deepstrike T2 with 15 boys + zag, lose d3to assault the turn you land and not shoot? color me happy.

Yet again though, stormboyz are overcosted. I would only bring zag if you are playing a casual game, or have managed to make him work for you....

(though ran across my mind... if you have a biker boss who is centrally deployed and moves 12" on his first turn and fires instead of turbo boosting (heck he could turbo boost deeper)... then when zag drops drop him between the biker boss and a target he is too far away to assault (then move biker boss 12" forward into coherency with stormboys) and use stomboyz to charge unit 4-6" closer to themselves than the biker boss... allowing you to sling shot him into an assault. ... same principle could be done all over the board... could string storm boyz out over a 20" line and sling shot a mega boss across the field into a combat in BFE

I thought IC's could only join a unit by moving into coherency in the movement phase. Running/turboboosting is done in the shooting phase, so I dont think this can be done. Shame, that would be nuts.

Also, does Wzdakka have T5 or T6? His profile says just straight T5 with no brackets in my codex so I'm a bit confused. It would make sense for him to be T6, but I don't want to cheat people. Either way, having scoring bikes could be really handy for a mech list. If you didnt want to use a big mek, you could stick bikers in front of your vehicles to give the vehicles cover saves. and since bikers always have a +4 cover save, they dont care about being in the front. Plus younve got their dakkaguns and that 24" turboboost range for snagging late game objectives.

Ha! I was thinking he was t5 and that was another nogo on him!! Big mess up there! single s10 hits ID wazdakka with his no invlun! rough!

Zag drops in on movement phasem then move using normal movement to get into coherency... then in assault phase slingshot (slingshot won't be far the turn zag deepstrikes) but the slingshots can get longer, if you have the boyz just jumping around in their movement phase...

ie.

Zag and boyz wipe random squad and consolidate... (boss hasn't joined yet).. then on your movement move storm boys 12+1d6" torwards a high prioirty target, ensuring an easy charge roll.... then move warboss to back of squad (in coherency), sometimes you'll have to send stormboys some random direction away from the target in a line to get to the boss so he can end his movement in coherency... then roll charge range....

then boss will move 7" for his charge... 3" at his pile in.... 3" at end of combat... 3" at his next pile in on the same game turn (if you went first) and 3" again at end of their turn (if he isn't in range to swing yet)... so you could theoretically sling shot your boss 12" charge + 6" per player turn of "cant be shot at" movement across the field

drew a sketch

hope it helps explain

Ghazzy's main attraction last edition was his fantastic automatic 6" Waaagh! move. Now it just lets you run 6", and you can't run and assault with fleet anymore. So he lost a lot of his force multiplier ability. However, individually he has arguably gotten better. He's no longer pathetically slow from snp, and 2+ saves are just badass now. So, as a beatstick, he's improved.

How do you get 2 turns of Waagh shooting?

Ghaz's waagh lasts two turns. It replaces your normal Waaagh!

No invuln save on Gutsmek is kind of meh but he's got the 4+ cover always so that's not bad. I try to bubble wrap him with some bikers / nob bikers then peel off at the last moment.

gasshzs waghh lasts two player turns. Effectively 1 turn in total for shooting and other ideals.

More importantly, the Waaagh Plane rule only triggers on the turn the Waaagh was called, and only lasts for that turn.

So regardless how long Gaz's Waaagh lasts, Waaagh Plane only lasts the turn you call it. If you called it in your opponent's turn, you do not get the benefit of the Waaagh Plane rule.

Nope. As a beatstick he is still over 100pts more then a MegaBoss who you can actually argue CAN kick more ass then Ghaz hands down. How you ask? Well Ill answer that with another question.....how much does a Mega Armored boss cost? hmm/....add this....carry the 1.......x Pi..... and you get 100pts.....oh. Looky there, 2 megabosses for the price of Ghaz

On the other hand, Ghaz can probably kill off both those Megabosses and still keep going, as can most other beatstick characters.

This is true. Ghazzys main attraction for me is EW. That said regular megabosses with Cybork and attack squig are really good for the price.

I run Dok Grotsnik all the time. I put him with MegaNobz in a Trukk and shoot them out from Reserve. He gives them 5+ Invul and 5+ Feel No Pain, and permanently cures their low leadership/Mob Rule body count issues. Coming out of Reserves, you are allowed to ignore his Med Pak rule (page 124). The Trukk allows you to place the Gud Doktur and the ever enchanting MegaNobz 24-25" from your table edge, pretty much where you want them by turn 2 or 3.

Or I put him with a Mob of Boyz in a Battlewagon or on foot. Having 20-30 Boyz with FNP is pretty awesome, and they give the Mobz behind them 5+ cover with out a KFF. In fact, combining him with a KFF Big Mek makes a hell of a shield for a Green Tide list.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

I love the good dok myself but haven't got to use him much.

Do you take a warboss to make the meganobz scoring? or do you have another squad of scoring nobs? or do you run no scoring nobs and just have your dok and mek?

I have only gone up to 1850 with the Green Tide list, but I run just Boyz and Lootas with Grotsnik, and either a KFF Big Mek or a Bike Boss attached to another 30 Mob.

I have been playing a lot of 2000+ games lately, which is when I run such a solid (read expensive) unit, so I usually have at least 1 or 2 Warbosses running around to make them scoring anyway.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

I've played orks for about 24 months now and I just happened to read Old Zogwort's profile today. WTF he can turn any IC within 18" into a squig just by saying he wants to and has to roll higher than the opponent. No defense. No saves nothing. Poof your 300 pt deathstar is a squig. 145 pts

I meant that Ghaz has improved as a beatstick in comparison to himself in the last edition. He has improved over himself. Will a pair of cheaper megabosses do a better job? Yes, but i'm not comparing him to other hq choices. I'm comparing him to his previous state. For example, if grots got an extra attack in the next codex, then would they have improved as a combat unit over their previous state? Yes. Would they be a better combat unit than, well, anything else? Nope. But they're better than they were.

Yep. He's also BS 0, which, thanks to the new rules edition, means that any of his pyschic shooting attacks AUTOMATICALLY MISS (which is stupid) it means he can only use about half his normal powers :\ It's a shame too, because if he could still use his normal powers as well I think he'd be a really solid addition to a green tide list.

Guys... Wazzie is T6.

Check the codex though. It only says he's T5, and there's no (6) to imply that he gets the bonus. Like I said, I'm pretty sure he's T6, but the way the codex is written seems to imply otherwise. Either way, he's still a solid character, and mandatory if you want to play a biker list. I'd prefer to not have to use special characters period, but if I have to use one, he's not so bad.

I must have a new copy as it's shows T5(6).

By the way, he's my favorite character and I have a nicely painted Forgeworld Zardnik model that i use for Wazzie.

EDIT: For my sanity sake, I just checked the updated Army Builder and he's listed as T6.

Awesome, I thought it was odd that he was only T5. I guess that's just because they made his profile seperate from the fact that his wargear includes a bike.

On the other hand, Ghaz can probably kill off both those Megabosses and still keep going, as can most other beatstick characters.

On the other hand Ghaz can get shot out of his transport and hike across a table, AND can only be in 1 place at a time. While to Megabosses more then likely wont. Also, add in the fact that they can be 2 places at once, and be 2 beat sticks rather then 1 over priced beatstick. Im not seeing how you can argue him being better, not now, not in 6th
