The Horus Heresy books are spectacular, and give you a great insight onto the history of the universe that we play/game/model/immerse ourselves in.

The Index Astartes.

Imho, relatively accurate descriptions by the GW studio team beat "legendified" freelance author novel interpretations any day. But it really depends on whether you just want to read about Space Marines kicking ass, or actually learn about them.

The Blood Raven Omnibus is a good read.

Pick up either the Ultramarine or Space Wolf Omnibus. Not the best writing, but good bang for the buck. After that, I'd suggest basically anything by ADB.

Of the HH novels, Mechanicum, Battle for the Abyss, Outcast Dead, and Nemesis are generally considered to be on the weak side. Some people love them though, so YMMV.

I have been told "Brotherhood of the snake" is a great entry point for seeing how a SM operates.

I just started with the Horus Heresy series. I'm up to Fulgrim (book 5 think) and they have been pretty good so far though a lot of it is just retelling the same story from different perspectives. I'm starting to wonder if I should be reading them in the order listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horus_Heresy_(novels) since some of the books sound like they are part of the same story arc but are 3 or 4 books apart on the list (such as Thousand Sons #12 and Prospero Burns #15).
