Hello, I am wondering if anybody have tryed putting a heavy weapon in a chimera and shooting out the hatch? Something like an autocannon.

Whats the advantage of it? If the chimera moves you can't fire it!

I always do that for my backfield Veterans. I usually run 2-3 Plasmagunners and an Autocannon in a Chimera. The vehicle can sit tight, or pivot, and fire both weapons while I shoot the Plasma, Autocannon and some spare Lasguns out the hatch. I believe if the vehicle moves you may still Snap Fire the Heavy weapon.

I usually do this in very small 500-750pt games, because I'll usually only have 2 - 3 veteran units and one will often end up camping on a backfield objective.

Yes you can, at BS1.
If you're shooting it at fliers, no biggy.
Although I love ACs I've found that I rarely get to use them in Chimera's all that effectively.

Like was already said, it would be useful for objective sitting but I couldnt see its extended use beyond that

It gives a good option to the squad for 10 points. That's what is appealing to me about the autocannon HWT.

If there is a flyer, you can snap shoot at it with the autocannon and PGs.
If your chimera is assaulted, you have two more STR 7 overwatch shots you can take.
If there is a target 40" away and its the last turn, you can take a snipe shot at it.

I use this idea as well with backfield objective campers. The Chimera acts as a bunker basically and the heavy weapon + all the special weapons fire out of the hatch. Camo Netting on the Chimera is a decent idea too if you hide it in a forest or ruin.

An AC is sometimes worth it, if you don't need the points elsewhere. Sometimes you'll be parked near an objective and able to fire at full BS and be glad you brought it, but when you have to snap fire it (and you usually will) you won't be too sad about the wasted points.

Autocannons have good synergy with Plasma Vets. I wouldn't skimp elsewhere to buy an Autocannon for them, but if you've got 10 points per squad, why not?

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

I'm guessing somewhere along the way autocannon Chimeras disappeared...

Edit: Just pulled up the 'dex and checked. I'm shocked that I never noticed. Uhm, wow.

I can't really see a downside to using left over points to toss an AC into a vet squad. It's not going to do a lot, but for 10 points you might get a hull point or kill here and there.

I'd say yes, for two reasons.

1.) you're not going to be moving literally every turn. Sometimes you've got to hold objectives after you've taken them. Sometimes your opponent is going to be barreling into your stuff so you're not going to have a lot of forward momentum at the beginning of the game. Sometimes lots of stuff can happen. Every turn you're not moving is one you're going to wish you had a heavy weapon.

2.) You can still snap fire them, which isn't nothing. Furthermore, you don't need to have a weapon firing at full BS every turn to make it worth taking. For example, it's not very difficult for a lascannon to make its points back even with just a turn or two of full-BS fire. It's the same reason it's still worthwhile to take heavy weapons in platoon squads even if you intend on moving them a lot.

I curently have a SW drop pod army. If I am ever to extend them it would have to be with IG allies I supose for the anti air + air. I do not know if I need to. A lott of drop pods is nice. Some cheap scoring units while my marines and long ranged suport does the fighting does not sound bad.

All drop pods is a bit nerve recking for the heart.

Better yet: Run the FW Chimera rules, with a squad + autocannon inside. The Chimera can swap it's turret for an autocannon for 5 points.
Were that only legal in (most) tourney play

Honestly it's not even that good. The multilaser is just as good against AV 10-11 (the only things an AC turret can reasonably expect to deal with), and the multilaser has a third shot against infantry which is worth more than the AC's rarely-relevant AP 4. Even if it was a free upgrade I'm not sure I'd take it.
