So, I recently came into possession of a very sizable collection of word bearers. As part of this, I have enough basic CCM with bolt pistols and close combat weapons to run as a squad of 20, or 2 squads of 10 with champions and special weapons. I know with 6th, it's pretty much useless to run these as rhino mounted squads, but would it be better to field them as a single big unit, or split them into two smaller units and stick them in landraiders?

Here is my two cents...

20 MEQ on foot are never going to make a rush to the other side in any reasonable force. Their going to be shot to bits before they get into assault, or the enemy will simply move away from them. Foot-based assault armies are dead in 6th.
In order for the assault to work, you need a delivery mechanism to make them work.

Rhinos don't work because you cannot get out and assault, even if the Rhino stood still. This means your rhino can move up on turn one, drop your guys out on turn two, and you can assault on turn 3. As you can well imagine, this does not work all that great.

Your final option for those guys is land raiders. They work wonderfully for this role, as they can get your guys up to the front, and you can assault out of them. AV 14 vehicles are even tougher in today's meta as people have been swapping their MGs for PGs due to more foot-based shooty armies.

However, this is not the optimal way to run an assault CSM list -- the land raiders are to expensive. You can do it, and you win games with it, but it does not match 30 nurgle bikers or 18 nurgle spawn. Just realize that its not optimal, and your good. Espeically since the price was a heck of a lot cheaper than 30 bikes or 18 spawn!

Eh I've seen CSM blobs work quite well, especially with a lvl3 sorc attached as If the sorc gets invisibility the blob becomes neigh unkillable. Factor in that charge distance is up to 12 now and they can get across the board, with running, much quicker than you'd think.

It's just a different style of play. No one stops playing orks or nids because they are often kitted out to move in blobs and dislodging 20 CC chaos marines with character support is a difficult proposition for some armies.

I run 20 man units often, and if they have the mark of khorne, they always deliver. Adding a psyker tends to add laughs. I even add kharn and use powers on my 20 man unit, choosing to fail kharns 2+ deny the witch! Now kharn has FNP!
