Trying to explain exactly what each of the different codexes in as broad a range as possible to a new player trying to make some mechanics into the thing. So far I got:

Imperial Guard - codex tanks and pie plates
Grey Knights - codex shiny expensive psychic marines
Vanilla marines - codex hero marines of choice
Space wolves - codex cheap marines and JAWS
Black templars - codex horde marines (possibly)
Blood Angels - codex fast FNP marines
Sisters of battle - codex T3 bolter marines (honestly not sure how to really describe this one)
Dark angels - codex plasma bolter wall marines
Orks - codex hordes of guys
Tau - codex railguns
Necron - codex reanimation air force
Chaos space marines - codex spiky marines of various flavors (also not sure how to describe this one)
Tyranids - codex psychic hordes
Daemons - codex deepstrike randomness
Eldar - codex psychic jetbikes
Dark eldar - codex shooty skimmers

Note these are just very gross simplifications trying to help someone sort out what each of the armies sorta represents in terms of what they will likely be fielding or interacting with their army/building a list in the current 6th edition builds. How close am I to what you all feel about the various armies?

If it's a new player, does he know the various terms and unit names you used to explain some of the armies? And are you trying to explain their style, or their rules/mechanics?
With some armies, you definitively focused on the former, but with others on the latter - it seems a bit ... random.

SoB I'd just explain as either "Codex Nuns with Guns", or, expanding on the description you already used "Codex T3 FeMarines with Miracles", respectively.

Hate to be that guy, but if anything Codex: Black Templars is currently Codex: Gunline Marines.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

ya, he's gotten a read through of the basic rules book and split a dark vengenance set with someone else but doesn't really know what he wants to expand into yet as he's still figuring out what he likes. Indeed it is a bit random as some of this is highly colored by what my own play style is and the stuff I've seen though I don't play all the codexes so I'm hoping you guys would fill me in the parts I got wrong.

I'm mostly trying to stick to style but for some codexes, the style is mostly their rules so it kind of meshes together somewhere. For example, BA can definately be played as a FNP all Jump troop army but could equally be effective as a fast mech army with MSU razor spam though it's also possible to razor spam as space wolf razor spam or GK razor spam or DA razor spam (there are great amounts of differences in actual rules but I'm trying to be general so I'm kind of trying to find a happy place where at least it shows up somehow different to something that may on paper or on the board to appear grossly similar.)

Here are some taglines I thought of that combine a bit of fluff with the codex's general capabilities, rather than a focus on one popular build:

Sisters of Battle: Zealous battle nuns, burning heretics with the best equipment the church can procure.

Necrons: An ancient race of undead cyborgs with access to unbelievably advanced technology and the galaxy's best starfighters.

Orks: An endless horde of rampaging space barbarians with a reckless disregard for their own survival. They ride to battle in ramshackle warmachines crudely bolted together from scrap salvaged from their most recent victories.

Tau: A race of calculating and scientific humanoids who rely on precision firepower and technological wonders to overcome their own physical frailty and achieve tactical dominance.

Eldar: An ancient race of haughty visionaries; their doctrine of war seamlessly blends technological firepower, martial skill, and mystic power.

Dark Eldar: Riding to battle atop graceful skimmers, the sadistic dark kin of the Eldar take twisted pleasure in tormenting their foes with poisoned weapons and arcane wargear.

Tyranids: An endless swarm of insectile devourers, the Tyranids use a combination of horde tactics, monstrous entities, and psychic dominance to overwhelm those who stand and fight.
