I don't think a similar topic has been created yet, but please feel free to correct me if so.

I love the new Sammael, a fast character with some hefty firepower and a great AP2 combat weapon that strikes at initiative. However, even though he has Eternal Warrior, he's a bit weak for an IC with only a 3+/4++.

How do I propose to solve this? Stick him with a more durable unit that won't slow him down.

Sanguinary Guard.

Sticking Sammael into a group of allied (or vice versa) Sanguinary guard would give him some 2+ armored "bodyguards" that can actually keep up with his 12" movement range. It would ALSO grant the SG the Hit & Run and Scouts special rules. The main downside I can see to this tactic is that the SG don't have the range or firepower that he does, but Sammael as an I5 AP2 attacker is pretty deadly in melee as well.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Terribad idea?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think an IC from one detachment can't join a squad from the other detachment.

BRB p112

Battle brothers may be joined by allied ICs.

DA and BA are battle brothers.

Throw in a jump pack sang priest and that squad is very tough to dislodge. You could even add the chapter banner to buff everyone. I like it.

This is a really interesting idea. It could work, but what would you equip the Sanguinary Guard with?

I'm not quite sure, probably keep them cheap. Infernus Pistols have too short of a range to make use of without a Dante-deepstrike. I'd probably keep them mostly with Glave Encarmines. Possibly 3 Power Swords and 2 Power Axes, at the most add in a power fist. Sammael will be forced to take challenges due to lack of a captain in SG, but that shouldn't be a problem for him 90% of the time with I5 AP2.

Power Fist seems kind of redundant when you have Power Axes already for free. The only thing you really get for doubling strength is causing Instant Death, stopping FNP, or fighting a Monstrous Creature. If you throw them at a Monstrous Creature you are doing it wrong. I don't really think the Power Fist would be necessary. The Hand Flamer is whatever overall too.

I'm mainly thinking that power fists would allow you to easily damage vehicles compared to the Str 6 attack an Axe Encarmine would be. You wouldn't want to be charging vehicles of course, but for 10 points it's not terrible.

FNP though is very much a thing with the new CSM codex. Lots of nurgle armies out there. Would allow you Str 10 PF on the charge to negate Plague Marine FNP.

Don't forget that Sammel has skilled riders, ad this gets applied to his whole unit and thus I believe SG will no ignored dangerous terrain tests.

Thunder wolf cavalry might be another interesting option, though I really like the BA idea.

Only downside is that jump infantry assaults are still slowed by difficult terrain. The Calvary doesn't have this problem. Although on the upside jump infantry can hop over terrain.

Sammel can't join Thunder Wolf cavalry, DA and SW are allies of convience.

Sammael's pasma cannon and tl storm bolter would also help softening up hard targets.
