i've recently taken to the idea of getting an airbrush. problem iss, for a beginner i can't warrant 160 quid for something that has a name behind it versus a kew kits for around 70 - 80 quid for a gravity fed airbrush (dual action i think) and a syphon fed one, plus a compressor. i understand that cheaper isn't necessarily better but nor is the opposite. would these 'budget' kits be sufficient for me to start out with, then if there is really a difference to buy another airbrush later on down the line? (obviously not a 160 pound one!!)

cheers!

I have one of these budget kits and pretty much exclusively use the gravity fed brush that it came with. The whole set up works just fine for me. I am very meticulous about keeping my airbrushes clean and have had no real problems. Every now and then I get some dried paint in the tip but it's easy enough to clean out. I've been using citadel paints and vallejo model colors....both of which I thin down using Vallejo thinner medium.

These kits are great for starting out. I'd recommend getting a compressor with tank though. Check out eBay as well - you can often find the same for £10-£20 cheaper.

I don't know the compressor is great but I've had issues with my airbrushes to the point that they're so much hassle (not spraying so having to clean and reclean and the like) that I've not used it for a while.

This is the exact situation I was in around 8 months ago and decided to go ahead and get the The KMS Airbrush Kit AS186 bundle from amazon.
I couldn't be more happier with it now I'm getting my head around the ins and out of airbrushing.

The advice from Brother Vord is spot on, All of my problems while finding my way were either caused by dry tip or not using a proper thinner.
So, Some vallejo thinner and a bit of research on you tube and now I can't imagine painting without it.

Even if you were to only use it for primer/basecoating Its a win/win in my book.
