I was wondering if the helmet colours were different pre heresy for officers/sergeants as they are in 40k, ?
Also, I ve seen a few armies with red helmets and white lines up the middles, what does this represent ?

The red helmets were a Codex Astartes addition, based on Roboute reversing an Ultramarine adoption of an old Nostroman gang tradition.

Gangers who had betrayed their gang but were too useful to kill dyed their hands red as a mark of shame. The Night Lords turned the red hands into a mark of censure to be worn on armor. Curse explained the basics, but not the origin to Roboute, who added the red helmet as a mark of censure for poor performance to the Ultramarines. Then an Ultramarine with a red helmet did something awesome and spoileriffic, so Roboute made the red helm into a mark of distinction in that Legionaire's honor.

When the codex Astartes was written, the red helm became the standard identifier for a Sergeant.

So before the Heresy, IF sergeants would not have had red helmets.

I've head somewhere that all IF had red helmets pre-Heresy, not sure on the source or canonicity, probably just one guy's speculation, but I always thought it sounded cool.
