This question might show me to be a little out of the loop but hey... I am. I was talking to a friend of mine today about the new Dark Angel codex. Last year, I began building a DA army, but it was a sub-chapter of my own color scheme. My friend tells me that in the new DA codex, there is only one DA sub-chapter and that is THE Unforgiven. I've been waiting to buy a copy of the 'dex because I want a paperback version, but he tells me this won't happen. So, is he correct? Are DA players limited to just two color schemes? Seems "against the spirit of the game" to me.

Two things to note, the first is that if you are hoping for a paperback version of the new DA codex, be prepared to wait for a long time. GW has shown no intention to release soft cover versions of the fantasy army books, I doubt they will release soft cover 40k codices. Secondly, your friend is completely wrong. There are multiple DA successor chapters, and the Unforgiven aren't even a successor chapter. They are the DA who sided with Luther and rebelled against Lion El'Jonson and the Emperor after the Horus Heresy.

Ok, good. Some people may not think it's a big deal, but I like playing to fluff... With my own flavor added in where it fits.

Page 16 of the new codex names at least 6 successor chapters, which were listed in the previous post, it's just that they collectively call themselves the Unforgiven.

So yeah, there's still plenty of choice for paint schemes.

If brute force isn't the answer, it's only because you aren't using enough of it.

Yeah, I figured as much. Guess I'm just going to have to shell out $50 for a copy.

the dark angels, and all their successor chapters, collectively refer to themselves as the unforgiven. the dark angels that rebels with luther are called the fallen.

Sorry, you are right, I have no idea why I got the two mixed up.

Also, in the spirit of 40k, I don't see why you can't make up any successor chapters you feel like with their own stories, companies, founding, characters etc as long as it fits with the Dark Angels fluff and doesn't contradict anything.

I would personally be thrilled if I encountered a successor chapter color scheme on the table. My very dim understanding of 40k lore says that successor chapters are as numerous as the original chapters and are in fact all descended from the original legions. In which case, any successor chapter of the Ultramarines legion, for instance, would have the same geneseed and much of the same practices as the Ultramarines chapter and also be equally numerous.

This means that functionally, all chapters are equal and all successor chapters can be played with equal gusto for DA Codex, BA Codex, C:SM, etc. Take pride in your successor chapters, and also take pride that you are unique and will try something different.

You're right. Well put. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a successor chapter from any SM faction. It's always a chapter that is GW-conceived. Which is fine, I guess. My Orks do love pounding on some Blood Angels.

If you want to make your own back story, color scheme, and characters up for a new successor chapter, go for it. As long as people know what book your getting your rules for it will be perfectly fine and a lot of people will like your army more.
