You don't really need lessons. There's methods that produce perfectly good tabletop quality models. The most common is 'magic wash', which is what I use on my models. Basically, block in all of the main colours you want, then use a good, dark general wash on the entire model. Something like the Army Painter Inks. Then go back over and re-layer the raised areas with the original colour, then do an edge highlight with a lighter colour. It's always better to do the painting yourself. If you're not happy, give them to your friend to strip, but they do them yourself again. You'll learn a lot more by doing than reading how.
