In days before, the gears still turned and the old machines still worked. The sky was clear and blue, and life flourished. Then noxious clouds came and choked the air. Smoke blanketed the sky. Some people departed in flying cities, ascending above the clouds to the World Above. Others dug deep beneath the ground, vanishing into the World Below. Meanwhile, those in the Borderlands watched the world grow dark as the gears ground to a halt.

Gearworld: The Borderlands is a game of negotiation, conquest, and construction in which two to four players compete to gain the favor of the Sky People for their tribe of scavengers in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Based on the classic board game Borderlands designed by Bill Eberle, Jack Kittredge, and Peter Olotka, Gearworld: The Borderlands has streamlined the original rules and re-imagined the game’s setting while retaining its predecessor’s spirit and core mechanics.

Looks like an open thread... I'll chime in.

Well, just seeing the box and reading the blurb had me intrigued. I know nothing about the previous game

However, the FFG site shows the board with the pieces, and I was a bit disappointed. This was primarily due to the bright, Day-Glo appearance of the board and red/green/blue/yellow (?) pieces. I don't associate steampunk with such bright colors. I am definitely not a steampunk purist in any sense, it is just the opinion of a casual steampunk fan. A gritty-colored board with metallic pieces--now you're talking.

The mechanics sounded Euro-centric--I could be wrong. Euro games are not my primary cup of tea, but I do want to give them more play.

Hope it is a good game though.

P.S. Note to any game designers reading--I think a board game with Dystopian Legions-scale minis would have a lot of potential. I have pledged Rivet Wars, but I think there is also promise in a game with "natural human" figures.

Yeah, I'm not excited about this one -- just posting for those who might be. (I'm also less a fan of Euro than Ameritrash.)

For steampunk, I have great expectations for:

Here's hoping it doesn't get scuttled!

This game is a re-theme of an old game called Borderlands. If you check it out on Boardgamegeek, you can find several free versions of the original game to print out and try for yourself to get a gist of what the new version will probably be like.

This is probably a compromise between design aesthetic and usability. While dark, gritty and metallic is very appeasing to the steampunk setting, brighter colours make it easier to read and give good contrast (e.g player one is RED, player two is BLUE rather than player one is SILVER, player two is DARK GREY) so that people can easily recognise different players/meeples/resources etc. And I would say that especially in the boardgame market you want your game to be accessible to as many as possible, and having colour schemes that would be a PITA for the colourblind/optically challenged can really hurt your market.
