I currently collect High Elves but I also want a 40k army. The Chaos Daemons really take my fancy. I have £35 at the moment and I would like advice on which squad to buy first including paints and other expenses. Thank you!

Plague bearers. Use the fantasy zombies. 30 models for like 25 bucks.

First off, welcome to the Dark Side! Nurgle provides the cookies, (poisoned sure, but still tasty!), and Tzeentch will simply screw with you depending on his minute-by-minute change of heart...

There's alot of chatter about the likely possibility of Daemons getting new books soon, so it's kinda hard to say what'll be good and what could be getting 're-balanced'.
Right now for example, ALL! of our Troops choices are absolute crap. They're overcosted and only Plaguebearers & Horrors are even remotely playable. (Bloodletters & Dameonettes may look cool, but they're complete wet noodles atm due to being purely 'assault only' infantry that has to Deep Strike into play for example.)

I'd say for now, just pick any one unit that really appeals to you looks-wise and take the next few weeks to build/paint them up.
The "traditional" colours for each God are;
- Khorne = Red, Black & Brass
- Tzeentch = the eight 'colours' of magic in Fantasy
- Nurgle = mouldy greens, browns, dirty oranges and palid flesh tones for that freshly infected look
- Slaanesh = bright & garish, typically incorperating pinks, purples and pale blues + grey or elf flesh for skin tones

We should know for sure what the March release will be, (and weather or not it's new Daemon rules + models), within the next 10-12 days.

Hope this helps!

We can't give you advice until you tell us what god you want to run, or gods, and furthermore how you would like them to play. Please first buy the codex with your cash and then read it, we can help you much better after that.

Buying a Daemon codex or Army Book is probably a pretty poor idea at this time, considering all the rumors about how close they are to getting shiny new books...

If you can find them for cheap then sure, but no reason to rush out and spend full retail on them when they could very likely be obsolete within 3 weeks time!
