Basically looking for case advice, as I don't like the cut out eggshell method

Yep this would be better in the discussions sub forum but a mod will move it.

But to help you out a bit. Lot's of folks use foam, there are plenty of companies that sell it,

BattleFoam makes customer trays for armies but they are not cheap.

Sabol has pluck foam (you basicaly pull little tabs out to get the shapes you want).

there are others as well.

As to bags..... they are not cheap. If your flying with them its a good idea.

if your just taking your stuff from the house to the store in your car. I use big plastic bins I bought at Walmart cheap and just put my foam in them. works great and saved me a few hundred on bags....

On another note. DONT USE EGG CRATES trust me on this nothing good will come of it......

Some companies sell hard cardboard boxes with foam for miniatures inside. Cheaper than getting a fancy shell for your foam.

Any sizes and brands you had in mind?

I've seen the tackle box work well, but honestly you've invested a ton of money and time into your models take care of them. Get some good foam and some type of case or plastic bin that fits it snugly. Your models and your sanity will thank you.....

Hmm, so what about buying cut out foam for miniatures from a good company, and then putting it in a plastic bin from a big department store? I imagine that would save money over something like a Citadel or Battlefoam case. Anybody do that>?

I've heard many times that battlefoam trays fit perfect in xerox boxes.

lol for some reason when I asked the question I assumed miniature foam companies all had foam trays the same size, but that isn't so. so I'd have to figure out how big a companies foam is, and then find a tub or box to go with it...

If you're willing to spend the money, Battlefoam or KR Multi-case I have found to be the most popular.

I went with KR for mine as Battlefoam's cut out shapes simply didn't work if you had a miniature that wasn't posed in the standard way or if it placed on any scenic/resin base.

Not to mention KR's customer service has always treated me very well with everything from helping me choose foam, detailed advice on repairs (due to my own negligence).

There's also the minor issue of the bad press Battlefoam occasionally receives due to it's owner, if you care about that sort of thing.

Slightly side topic as I realize the OP does't like eggshell or cutout cases but...

I've used gun cases and they've worked really well for me.

I do recommend contact cement for holding bases on (assuming you've glued a base layer of foam under a foam cutout tray.

I tried spray adhesive (too weak) and pliobond (too sticky and wastefull) and basic contact cement is the one thing I've found that works well. That said, a fellow in my club says there is a specific foam adhesive that comes in a caulk-gun tube that works really well for bonding foam. I plan to check it out in the future.

If you want to spend money on a high-end case then more power to you, but if it's just a peeling foam bottom, then there are easy solutions.

These days I pretty much just use cases from Pelican - http://www.pelican.com/home.php.

If you think our hobby has expensive cases, you've never seen these. Of course, two members of my family work there so I can get them a little cheaper. I have cases the size of a lunch box to one so large I couldn't take it on a cruise.
