I can't seem to figure out what would make a nice, fluffy ally for my Tallarn. I have toyed with the ideas of blood angels with jump packs to keep up with my mech army, or an Imperial Fists successor chapter because of the shared history with the Iron Warriors. Should I necessarily go with marines of some kind? The only thing I'm totally against is Grey Knights, I just don't really care for them and their paint scheme. Any ideas?

How about more guard! Try an armored battle group!

If you're really looking for allies ... a desert-based Marine Chapter with tan power armour might actually be a decent idea. At least I don't recall ever having read about one. You could probably steal tons of inspiration from Dune for its background, too.

Maybe some of the "Desert Support" sons of medusa?

It's the one on the right. Bear in mind that this is RT era, so if you don't like the medusa head icon (I don't), you could always use their newer current icon

An Eldar unit. Pathfinders and rangers I think would compliment the visual appeal.

A while back, I remember seeing a Space Marine army with a desert camo scheme, fully mechanized (light vehicles mainly). All the guys were without helmets but with red berets sculpted on (very easy one to sculpt by the way).

They were obviously modelled with a british paratroopers feel, the command squad having a bagpipe and all
If I remember correctly, it won the best painted army at a GT a long time ago (probably about 12 years ago)

You could go with Elysian drop troops rules wise as well, representing long range air-support and special forces support for your guys

Rules wise (for the marines), Blood Angels / Space marines (bike captain) / Dark Angels (Ravenwing) might be your best bet if you want to indeed keep up with a "fast" guard army and keep the fast&light feeling. Definitely forget about Space Wolves, they tend to be very slow this edition (Long Fangs + foot Hunters)

Eldars could indeed be ok for the look and feel they have, rangers and scorpions (I mean, friggin' scorpions in the desert ! just not painted green of course), but they still kinda suck nowadays : / And they should all BURN, they're XENOS !

Elysians with lots of their dune buggy type vehicles would be cool. It would give you a kind of "Rat Patrol" style element and keep a desert theme.

I like Shredsmore's idea. If I remember correctly several of the chapters that fought in the Badab War had desert world schemes defined for them. If you look at Gitsplitta's P&M Blog (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/289929.page) he did some of his Mantis Warrior's in a similar color scheme as well.

Maybe some Biel-Tan Eldar, after all they did ally during the Battle For Tallarn

When I played Soulstorm and used the Talarn guys I tended to pair them off with a marine chapter called the Desert Lions.

I have them in a nice desert tan armor with brownish bronze trim and used the icon and flag from the Celestial Lions.
All in all it comes together nicely.
