I'm sure this has been bandied around a million times, but it's something I've been interested in doing ever since I read Mechanicus and most recently Titanicus. Love me some Mechanicus tech guard, and I'm thinking of putting an army together that could be used as such. Things I'd like to include are Tech Priests (obviously...), various levels of tech-guard, from just sort of enhanced guardsmen all the way up to crazy augmented and stimm-high skitarii, and also Knights, because Knights seem crazy awesome.

So, the first hurdle with this process is deciding what army-list I'd like to base this army off of, and, after giving it some thinking, it seems like Chaos Marines might actually be the best list to base this on, in a counts-as fashion, especially with the new inclusions in the list, such as cultists and the like. I'm thinking cultists as your standard guardsmen, various types of marines, from generic flavour to chosen as variously enhanced skitarii, and then I can use some of the freakier stuff as counts as for bigger tech stuff, such as weapon servitors and praetorians, and then I can use defilers in the place of Knights (which I think might be a decent counts as).

So... do people think that's workable?

Also, as a sidenote, what would people use as Knights? Obviously, I could heavily mod a Dreadknight, but I was thinking of looking outside of classic WH40k models. I've had a look at some Iron Kingdoms 'jacks, and some of them seem like they might be workable, although I'm concerned they may be a little small. What do you guys think?

Using Warjacks as AdMech units? Under 40k rules? lol, If I pulled that on my FGLS, a couple of local PP diehards I know and love would just explode in a blossom of pure, unfettered nerd rage

I've always thought the oh-so-original steampunk mechs PP were, to put it nicely, directly inspired by the old epic-scale Titan miniatures. With some converting, they will look just fine. Beware these might be too small for Knights, though. Most 'jacks I've seen are dreadnought-sized at best.

On the other side there's Dreamforge's plastic Leviathan. That one might be a bit too big but, hey, it looks just amazing.

War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

I think the Leviathan would be pretty much perfect, although maybe on the large side, but it's pretty expensive. If that changes, I'd definitely consider it.

I've not had much hands on experience with PP's 'jacks, so I'm not sure on the scales really. I'll have to bug some friends who've got some to see how big they get, or maybe try trawling the internet for some comparison pics.

Having looked at the PP stuff, I agree 'jacks might be too small. I think people might complain about a defiler fitting in the same space as a dreadnought!

Having looked again, it looks like the PP colossals might fit the bill better.

That'd make a pretty impressive Knight, especially once painted in admech red and gold.

The best knights I've seen are based on the defiler kit anyway. Use a sentinel cockpis as the head and straighten out the defiler legs to get a more upright pose. If y9ou sesrch around on the dakka gallery I'm sure you'll find some examples.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I think Khador and Merc colossal fit the 40K aesthetics much better than the Cygnar one.

Problem with using chaos dex is that you end up with that annoying chaos challenges and rewards rule which makes little sense for Ad Mech. Not that I can come up with an better alternative...

It is indeed workable, I'd reccomend browsing this thread: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248882-knight-reference-thread which you've just inspired me to look at, and see what other people have been up to as far as Admech and Knights counts-as are concerned. Quite addictive stuff now that you've started me looking, but I know I just don't have the patience or skills for something this awesome. Good luck!

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop
