The most common stuff I see:
Eldrad or a regular Farseer with runes of warding. This guy hurts enemy psykers and buffs your own units; one of the favored and most notorious combos being Invisibility cast on a nasty assault unit to make them even nastier in assault and hard to hurt with shooting.
A squad of Fire Dragons with Exarch, who has the Crack Shot and Tank Hunter powers to ignore cover saves and re-roll armor pen. Then have him man a Quad Gun, so he can shoot the heck out of enemy flyers.
Guardian jetbikes for cheap mobile scoring.

In money? You'll need to check with your Friendly Local Game Store, the GW website, or your favorite internet store.
In points? You'll need to check a codex. Although if you search through the Army Lists forum, you may be able to find threads where people have posted the unit costs. Posting the costs of individual upgrades is against Dakka rules; we don't want to be a used as a substitute for folks buying a codex.

In addition if running a meched up DE list a WS + Warwalker squadron can be really helpful. You basically take the best parts of the CWE codex(eldrad, firedragons, and warwalkers) and add it to DE. Eldrad is 200+ points. Warwalkers will run about 200. Some firedragons with an exarch arent super expenisve unless you bring a transport for the.

I play the dark halie-star which, i must say, is dastadly effective. The unit consists of how ever many ALLIED (really, really important they are allied, not from your dark eldar codex) halequins you see are needed, a farseer, shadowseer, Archon w/ shadowfield and fovourable build, and a buttload of halequin kisses.
In otherwords this is about getting a 2++ re-rollable for the fortuned Archon, a 2+ re-rollable cover if in ANY cover at all, and a buttload of rending wounds with re-rolls (re-roll ANY dice, not just un-successfull, yes you can re-roll 4's and 5's to get more rends )
This costs a fairbit, but substantually less then most over deathstars and is MUCH more survivalbe and efficent. Want AV? You got a singing spear and fusion pistol and a blaster, Need high AP? Huskblade and rending.
The cost is largely dependent on how many arbitary wounds you want ( Normal quins) and how beefed up an Archon you want. A simple shadowfield and venomblade wouldn't be bad, gives the 2++ re-rollable to put at the frount of the unit and does a bucketload of wounds, while adding a huskblade and a soultrap mean you can throw him at any unit with abandon. Hopefully straight at your oponents warlord to get the point, and str6! But eitherway, my Halie-star comes to around 350pts, for 9 models (5 quins, troupe leader, Shadowseer, farseer, archon) with a 2+ re-rollable in most cases, which i used to run straight at an imperial guard army *Cough through cover Cough* and only lose 1 quin, and proceeded to multichareg 3(!) units, All but wiping all of them and a warlord kill (str6, yeay!) and then leapfrogging over to the rest of his hiding infantry, which i multicharged off his obj's to win.
Long story short, do dark halie-star, people may hate you, but you will love yourself

Scatter Laser equipped War Walkers are also popular, giving you a whole lot of mid-strength shots to boost the Dark Lances in your list.
I also like Pheonix Lords.

That Harlie-Star unit sounds like fun but I don't wish to invest so heavily in such small pointed lists.

The most effective units in a Eldar allied detachment are Farseers (and Eldrad), Guardian Jetbikes, Rangers, and War Walkers. Farseers bring great psychic defense and have access to the Divination table. Eldrad can either be a powerhouse with the Divination table or have a great chance of getting Invisibility for a Harlequin or Beast death star. Guardian Jetbikes are cheap and effective scoring units that can hide for most of the game and then go contest or take objectives. Rangers are good at sitting on home objectives, which Dark Eldar were never really great at. War Walkers provide more AV threats for cheap and can put out lots of S6 attacks. I don't tend to use them since poison is effective against MCs and the S6 is only really great against light transports, which people are moving away from in 6th.
I run Eldrad or a Farseer (depending on point values), one squad of rangers, one squad of jetbikes, and one squad of Dark Reapers in my Dark Eldar list. Despite being really overpriced, the AP3 that the Dark Reapers provide can be brutal against MEQ lists. This is doubly true if you can roll the power that makes your shots ignore cover. Fast Shot on the exarch lets him fire two shots from the Icarus Lascannon instead of one, which is pretty nice. You save points by taking the lascannon instead of the quad gun and can spend those on the exarch upgrade. If you really need to fire at a flyer then Eldrad can take the gun so you don't waste the rest of your Dark Reapers.
I don't really like using Fire Dragons to man the ADL gun. They don't score and you waste all of your shots except the exarch since there is no way your meltaguns are going to be in range of your target if you are sitting behind the defense line.

I like to ally an Avatar and Wraithlord to join my three Talos' to make a Godzilla Elf list. It's not competitive, but it's fun.
For competitive play, I go with Rangers as has already been stated. If you place some Rangers behind an Aegis Defense Line and on an objective, they will do a better job of holding it for you compared to Wracks or Warriors.

Nice combo. Automatically Appended Next Post: Unclemeat its ironic that I was thinking the same way about the Reapers vs Dragons before I read your post. Im ordering a set of Ghost Specters from FW just to fit the role

I was under the impression that Eldar powers did not effect Dark Eldar models. I assume you are getting the re-rollable 2++ from Fortuning the harlequins? Does the archon benefit from the re-rollable save because he is a part of that unit even though he is not a "Eldar" model?

Buckeyey6 do not ask questions like that here. That is one of the annual fights over in the you make the call forum and nobody seems to be able to come close to an awser except "this needs to be FAQ" although I might be bias here. Go over there and look at it.
However if you trade in for regular rulebook powers you can get to target dark eldars.

I don't wanna cause trouble here but it does say under the Battle Brothers rules that allied units count as friendly for psychic powers if they are Battle Brothers (as eldar and dark eldar are).
So I would say you are all good to fortune the archon.
