So I've got my 46 model Mantic Corporation army set incoming.

I'm feeling like bringing a blob in as allies for my DA to add some boots on the ground, soaking up some force multipliers while they're at it. This will probably consist of being Azreal's extra large bodyguard, or maybe hanging out with a librarian for kicks pending list.

My biggest questions are how large of a blob should I aim for, and how should I gear that blob?

The army set comes with 38 infantry, and 4 HWT. So basically I'll have to take a HWT per IS, or stick one in a P/CCS.

First thing that comes to mind is PCS, 4x IS with HWT, and a Primaris/commissar.

OR: do 3x IS with a CCS, PCS, 5 stormtroopers, and a spare model (marbo?).

OR: 3x IS, PCS, HWS, and CCS, but HWS doesn't seem so hot without a commissar to baby sit.

Lastly: PCS ISx2, vets x2, and then the Psyker or Commissar. Have exactly one Chimera and one vendetta.

For some lists I may be down with taking a CCS, vet squad, vendetta and calling it done, but I want to try and use all/most of these guys as I love the models.

Beyond which squad configuration, I can't decide which special/heavies to put into the infantry squads. I like autocannons and they're cheap, but lascannons give the blob extra teeth if it comes across some TEQ (or tanks down-field). Plasma guns fit with the lascannons but all of that gear makes them hideously expensive especially if Azreal/Librarian and/or primaris is hanging out.

Also since the sgts will be challenge-bait for the ICs, would it be wise to give them choppy power axes, or leave them sacrificially under-geared?

Assume general Meta and TAC list. It doesn't need to be hyper-competitive, but if they get painted fast enough, the list may see a FLGS tournament eventually. I can field most anything in the DA codex aside from the brand-new units, so in concerns to what else is in my list, its basically whatever else would make it work with the IG additions.

Thanks for reading!

What special/heavy weapon models do you have access to (either in the basic troops, or that you're able to convert)?

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The heavy weapon teams supposedly come with "heavy laser" and "autocannon" variants, so while I'm not 100% till I open the box, probably both AC and LC. I have HB laying around and ML/mortar are cheap on ebay.

The models come with 3 special weapon variants per 10 so likely 4 of each plasma, melta, and flamer counts-as.

On the off-chance the specials included are unreasonable as GW stand-ins, I have plenty of mg/pg I could borrow from marines, though they'd be huge in comparison.

The only heavy weapons you want to use are Lascannons and Auto cannons. And less of the latter, more of the former.

this set sounds exactly like what I need to boost my IG army... where can I get it?

okay I found this but out of curiosity do you think these are good substitutes for guardsman? I may buy some. Also it would give my army some variety. And it's sooo much cheaper

http://www.thewarstore.com/product71578.html where I got them.

These aren't GW minis, they're corporation marines from mantic games. I think they look great, but I dunno if they would fit in alongside standard guardsmen, they're truescale.

I'm pretty sure they'd look fine next to marines, or orks, or basically anything else. They may or may not work with your guardsmen, they have smaller heads, weapons, and the like.

Post in the mantic forum here on dakka has a size comparison about 3/4 of the way down http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/500991.page .

What I was thinking is to have them in separate squads, so they won't be directly next to each other. And they were just born on a low gravity planet so that they are smaller.. just like catachans are all rambo.

I personally run a 30 man blob with Azrael with x3 Plasma Gun and x3 Lascannon, no upgrades on the sergeant, platoon command with x2 sniper rifles + autocannon, with the lieutenant on an Aegis quad gun.

My reasoning with plasma is to take advantage of the 4++, and it goes well with Azrael's combi-plasma. Then I went with lascannons because... you don't need a reason to go with lascannons (okay, the AP2 lines up nicely with the plasma).

To be fair, the only reason why I run it is because Azrael looks pretty neat leading guardsmen into battle rather than it being particularly good at anything.

Hospy: We are thinking along similar lines there, in both loadout and reason to take it

Zutch: I was thinking the same thing, different paint schemes and or separate units, not all guardsmen are created equal. Not to mention under-strength groups are often mashed together to make them battle ready again.

President's day delayed the mail, I'm hoping to do an unboxing/thoughts with lots of pictures tomorrow if it finally shows up, I'll be doing some comparison shots as I couldn't find a boatload of them the last time I looked.

I have some Corp marines from Mantic. Great models, royal pain to glue though. GL man.

Thanks, I've heard as much about the gluing/assembly. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow.

Thanks, I'd appreciate it if you put up some comparison shots...

btw is there a way to get a notification when someone comments in a thread I've been commenting in? Like a little bit up at the top of the screen or something? Or do I just have to manually check all of them?

At the extreme very bottom left of the page it looks like there's a email notification button.
All of the threads i've posted in are also coming up subscribed in my profile so thats another way to check them easier.

If there are any other tricks i'm too new here to know

Also- in addition to just the marine comparison could you put up comparison pics for the veteran and ranger models too?

Thank you!

Turns out I was reading the Warlord traits on DA wrong, the FnP that the 6 gives only applies to DA units, so that puts a bit of a downer on a giant shooty blob sitting on objectives.

I guess Furious Charge + loads of power wep sergeants would be just as amusing though.
