I couldn't find a good traitor guardsmen thread so lets make one. I'm fairly new to it so far in the last 30 minutes, I have one model painted and ready to go. Any tips on how to make, model, paint or field a traitor guardsmen army?

Cover the army in chaos icons, would be a good start.

Next up: Which god did they turn to, or are they undivided?
Choose army colours based on the chosen god:

Khorne= Lots of red, lots of troop spam.
Nurgle= Green, various sickly colours. Make everything look infected.
Tzeentch: Get as many psykers as possible, use blue, purple, gold in your army. Keep the scheme mixed up with some random, yert fitting colours scattered around. Put on as many mutations as possible.
Slaanesh: Pink, draw a phallus on any tanks you have (Use that theme on any turrets). Use bright colours, spikes, and make the troops look like druggies.

Undivided: Dark, grim colours. Try to get a balance of sacrificial troops, and good tanks.

Selym has some excellent advice.

What army list will you be using? Codex: Imperial Guard (good choice), one of the Imperial Armor Siege of Vraks lists (IA5-7) (not as solid rules wise, but look fun)?

Tough Traitorous Guardsman

I run a Traitor Guard army using the Imperial Guard Codex, and I hope to start running lots of games with allied chaos marines.

I've used the renegade militia command squad from Forgeworld to represent my CCS, and for my normal guardsman I've used a combination of Cadian, Catachan and marauder bits from fantasy. I will probably also add some of the shooty cultist models into the mix too as I think they will fit quite well with my aesthetic.

Mine are dedicated to Slaanesh so I have different squads coloured pink, purple and light blue, but I'm thinking of moving towards a more unified colour scheme as my army expands.

I also want to get the awesome fantasy Chaos Sorcerer model to use as a primaris psyker. I think it would work perfectly.

If you're looking for traitor guard, a good source might be to start looking for the old 'lost and the damned' army.

Here's an example

Sorry, just had to.

Spoiler:

But yes, Selym has already posted some excellent advice! I guess the cliché "Traitor Guard" look is the black and dark red "Blood Pact", which by now has been featured in some GW photos as well (using repainted Cadian minis) and, as far as I recall, even had its own WD article a few years back. That one's fairly Khornate, though, so if you favour another Chaos God ...
For Nurgle, I have to say Forgeworld came up with a very awesome design in the Siege of Vraks book (I think). No green, not even an infected look, but everything was rusty and dirty. Lots of grey and brown. Imagine a WW1 trooper with gas mask and a metal helmet + chestplate, and age his gear by some 50 years. Voila!

The Traitor militia conversion kits from FW kick ass.

As an aside, I am struggling with which IG to go with for allies: Renegades, Cadian with FW hazardous environment kits, or DKoK. If I did Renegades, then they'd always be modeled as renegades, and I'd have a hard time fielding them with my Black Templars. The DKoK Cadians could be "Turn-Coat PDF" that I could ally with Chaos, on the other hand.

But the renegades are sooo pretty.

You obviously ask out the soulless, shallow army that has a parent with stock options in Geneva.

So the DKoK.

Well, they have cultist models now, too. I guess it depends on how you want to go with it.

On the one hand, you could go traitor guard that are deeply into their new lifestyle. Puss-spewing chimeras of nurgle, spiky bitz from the vehicle sprue thrown on everywhere, guardsmen that look more like cultists or renegades, etc.

On the other hand, you can do some fresh converts. I've seen a couple of guard armies done up in a rather classy way like this. Basically, you paint them up like regular imperial guard, but then you add just a splash of chaos. You wouldn't necessarily even notice it right away.

I've also seen it done with a regular guard color scheme of mottled camo with bright blue chaos arrows painted on stuff. Like, the just flipped over and had to throw a little paint on to show they switched sides.

I think with traitor guard, it really depends on how long they've been traitors..

Fluff wise:

Usually they won't have very much by way of a common color scheme or unit insignias. They tend to be thrown together with units from other armies. Even a single unit might be a mixture of 2 or 3 others. Also, the chaos icons will be ragged looking as if they were thrown on at the last minute while their uniforms will be scuffed up to remove the Imperial icons.

In short, think ragtag and go from there. Traitor guardsmen are cannon fodder and are treated as such by their Chaos lords.

This can most hilariously be put in effect by getting as many conscripts as possible, and getting the Russian-commander-guy (Chenkov?) who respawns dead troopers!

FOR KHORNE!! MAY THESE BLOOD SACRIFICES PLEASE YOU!!
