So given that my tax return has returned and ive taken care of all of my husbandly duties i have about 600 bucks left to start a 2nd force. The trouble im having is making a decision. Ive enjoy 40k as a complete hobby like most of you do. I really want to know in this communities experienced opinion what would be a good army to build from the ground up. I have a sizeable ultra marine collection and a horde of greenskins, i must something that will be equally rewarding to build and customize as it will be to play. All imput is greatly appreciated.

Id say one of the nine traitor legions I am currently building a Word Bearers force (havent had chance to use them yet tho) however they are really fun as especially with word bearers you can mix bits from the possessed/spawn/raptor/warp talon kits with the basic chaos marine box to make some interesting looking marines.

I'd go Guard, you already have CC with the Orks and mid range to short combat with the Marines. I'd definitely go Guard or Tau to get some long range shooting. That way if you feel like you want allies you have a nice mix to go for.

I would consider Guard or DE. Both will play differently than the current marines/orks that you have.

I personally like DE because the models look great and they certainly are much more difficult to play. Which means you will lose, a lot, until you start figuring out how they work. At which point you won't lose quite so much... but the experience will make you a much better player overall.

The question back to you is basically: what type of experience do you want? "Equally Rewarding" means different things depending on the person. For me DE is rewarding for several reasons: the models look great, play style is fast and furious, and when I win it's not because I had some uber great guns but rather because I had the right strategy, execution and a smidgen of luck. Also, the weapon load outs are such that it's pretty easy to learn what everything does. hint: you will almost always roll 3's to hit and 4's to wound.

As you can see in my sig, I have several different armies; I did play orks for a bit but ended up giving them away to a neighbor because I didn't really like the models. The armies I currently have all have different approaches ranging from specializing in CC, hit and run, stand and deliver, etc. It just depends on what mood I'm in.

It is important to know what your play style is, and without that we can't be much help.

I would simply recommend looking over the other armies and picking what you like the look of.

If you are looking for chaos touched, you can get a hold of some CSM with guard allies. CSM can be extremely customizable, and they get chaos rewards as you play the match!

That said, you currently have versatile marines, not sure if you're running melee or shooty or both, and horde orks. I would recommend something very shooty if your marines are not, otherwise look into other play styles, such as bikes, heavy vehicle, ect.

If you are looking for a differnce in close-combat, but some lovely guns, I would go for 'nids, but be aware that they are nowhere near as competitive as orks and sm. They are however, a joy to paint and play and they have some real diversity when it comes to painting. They can be green, blue, grey, whatever. I am a painting nut so they are amazing for me. They are so fun to play as well, especially the monstorous creatures like trygon's and fex's. I will show you an image of one of my better painted nids for some inspiration. Hope this helps, and happy wargaming for the future.

Try building the army from forgeworld. They have great minis and If your doing a Chaos army then some MK III or MK IV will look good in the army.

My ultra marines were built to be the second company. With rhinos and pretty much most of the other options, all the dreads, tank variations, even 3 storm talons. My group really play heavy story based campaigns were we really get into it. Fluff is
Pretty important to me and truthfully the fluffier the better for me. Play style i tend to try to flexible as possible due too the variety of armies my lads play. Truthfully i like getting my troops into ruins and really playing the terrain to my advantage, setting up killzones and fire points to draw out dangerous units and capitalize on my positioning. We really get into some nasty gufights. I dnt like getting caught in the assualt much, maybe thats why i mainly play on a ruin city board most ofthe time. It really lends to my play style

I would also suggest Craftworld Eldar. They can be a absolutely beautiful army when painted correctly and the thing is as they are one of the under dog armies of the editions when your not prepared for them they can be absolutely devastating

I do like the modles for the eldar i just dnt think i could do them justice paint wise i paint in a more realistic style and the eldar that i normally see is the highly stylized multicolored orgy of awesomeness

Then you wouldn't like DE.

Guard it is. Good fire teams, cover actually means something to them and you can have a ton of models on the board.

Traitor guard with CSM. This gives you the customization as well as the long range firepower.

I think a chaos cultist army with a traitor guard detachment could be fun to do, and has the military style and is fluffy (but not competitive).

I do really like this concept, im pretty sure i can load up on the dv cultist my group doesnt use. Then start buying some ig and start converting. I really would like to use the death corps minis from fw but not sure how cost effective it would be.

Why is not being competitive a good thing? Shouldn't an ideal list be both fluffy and competitive, not just fluffy?

I have a DKoK army. They are awesome models, but "cost effective" is about as far from the truth as possible. You're going to spend a lot of money no matter how you do it (veterans are expensive, blobs are really expensive), so you have to decide whether you are willing to pay significantly more money for your ideal models. And with a $600 budget they just might not be an option.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Is there any 3rd party companies that make head that would be similar to the dkok mask. I really do love the look of it and in your opinion hasit been a worthwhile investment

$500 is definitely enough to get a pretty goodly-sized 40k force of any army, including guard.

I think in your case, I'd have to agree with people who are focusing on the modelling. You've got the clean lines and elite units of space marines. You've got the ramshackle vehicles and gigantic horde of the orks.

I know you're intimidated by eldar, but I'd really give them a second look. Yes, there are some stone-cold awesome artists out there who can make eldar stuff look exceedingly awesome. The thing is, though, that eldar still look great even with mere mortal paint jobs. A simple, green and white biel-tan motif with nothing but a paint brush looks really nice.

Otherwise, I might consider dark eldar or tyranid (for the monstrous creatures).

Guard is a great army and I like playing it, but it does sort of fit squarely into what you already have - a horde of gribblies backed up by boxy-looking vehicles.

Would you by chance know of any galleries that have eldar with simple earth tone paint schemes.

Earth tone?

Well, you can take any of the major eldar craftworlds and desaturate them/reduce the contrast and they'll do fine.

Biel Tan in green and gray or green and tan, Iyanden in blue and khaki, Saim-Hann in more of a rust color.

Straight out of the box, ulthwe is pretty muted, as their colors are already black and kind of a cream color.
