Evening,

I am tossing up what my next purchase is going to be but I wouldn't mind some input from you guys. With the release of the new rules for flyers etc (need I say more) I am now thinking I need some flying transport. I like the idea of the stormraven gunship to transport my crimson fist sternguard along with a dread around the field but I have also tossed up getting one of the forge world assualt rams. It sounds cool more pricing and lack of transport for my dreads is sort of turning me off the idea. I had thought that maybe when I'm getting closer to fielding an apocalypse sized army (currently at 2600) I would get a ram then.
Thoughts?
(I apologize if this looks awkwardly written, I'm on my phone.)

Well, without knowledge of what you have right now, it's awful difficult to give too much advice, imo.

Games Workshop - Just because a dog is in the doghouse doesn't mean you don't care for them anymore. But when they crap on the floor over and over again, you need to make it clear that their behaviour won't be tolerated.

Yeah sorry about that. A quick army run down:

HQ
Pedro Kantor
Captain Cortez
MOTF
Librian

Elites
2/10 man sternguard squads
3 dreads of varies configurations
techmarine

troops
2/10 man tac squads
1/5 man scout squad

Heavy Support
1/6 man dev squad
predator tank

Fast attack
Stormtalon
attack bike

Transport options
2/rhinos
1/drop pod.

My usual tactic is to drop in a sternguard squad with Pedro, the techmarine and have my stormtalon & attack bike in close proximity and just shoot the hell out of everything with the special ammo and just the sheer amount of fire power. it's worked pretty well so far for me. My idea is to have the stormraven drop in another sternguard squad plus a dread to support the drop pod in the thick of it all.

More drop pods and stern guards sound fun.
Though with your current tactic perhaps some terminators and land raiders would give you some more things to try

Having run a stormraven as part of my SM since the model's release, I can safely say its a fantastic unit with Vanilla Marines. Since the stormtalon came out its even better. I usually run 5 Tac Termies with Chainfist and Heavy Flamer, and a TDA Libby with Vortex and GoI, Combiplasma and stave. An Ironclad rides in back toting DDCW, Seismic Hammer/Meltagun, Ironclad Assault Launchers and 2 HK. Works beautifully. I usually use the Talon to escort the Raven so they come in at the same time.

For the Raven I run Assault Cannon, Multimelta and Hurricaine Bolters, and the Talon I go for Skyhammer Missiles.

That is a hell of a lot of firepower! Does that make up kill everything in sight?

Normally yes. If the opponent has lots of vehicles I normally send the Raven in Hover Mode. Move on 12" and unload everything at vehicles or MCs as well as using POTMS to take out a second target or give the Hurricaine bolter a target at infantry.

If anything else I normally zoom the full 36" towards the enemy and Skies of Blood the cargo. I realise different groups interpret this rule differently but we interpret it as being allowed to do it while zooming.

Another trick I like it to have both flyers enter from the very corners, but opposite corners. So the Raven would come in from the right hand corner and the Talon the left hand corner. They travel at such an angle that Heldrakes can't hit both, and are capable of covering each other. One of the problems is that niether can shoot beneath them so if they can see each other they can cover each other.

But yes, the firepower more than makes the 385pts for the 2 flyers. The cargo in the stormraven is a personal thing I like to use and YMMV.
