The Gaunt's Ghosts novels make it clear that while there are standardized vehicles in the Imperial Guard, there are often some local variations on worlds that either lack the means to develop the standard designs, or use traditional vehicles. Krieg especially makes extensive use of home designed, like the Ragnarok.

I'm wondering if there are any other alternative Russ designs that have been featured. Either in books, artwork, or actual models (last one unlikely). Just curious how you would keep the visual style with different tanks.

Think of something clever to say.

These are just the Leman Russ models offered from FW notice at least 3 varieties or the normal variants. This does not count close equivalents such as...

The Thunderer Siege Tank (which I actually really like)

or
Destroyer Hunter Killer (Nobody seems to like me tank)
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Imperial_Guard_Tanks/DESTROYER-TANK-HUNTER-COMPLETE-KIT.html

Then there are the vulkans, malcadors, etc. which have similar weight classes and armor categories but are not for standard 40K. These are the on gaming board variants only someone wiser in the fluff-fu will be along shortly or (ninja)have already been here.

Don't forget the Ragnarok, which has a much bigger, boxier turret but fulfills the same role as the Leman Russ. It is also much easier and less costly to produce.

Oh Wow!!!!! that looks VERYVERY much like the WWI renault PT-17 tank. It would not take much conversion to turn this:

Wow....I might have to go out and get me some of these!

KV-2

Hmmmmm....had not seen that one...I am seeing what you are saying there

Time to look that one up for sure.

*EDIT* The more I look at this tank, the more I agree with you. It is one of my most favorite parts of this game (as I do not play in tournaments)...the conversion of other models into those that fit on the battle field with established units. I am currently working on a conversion of a 1/35 scale MK IV WWI tank into a LR variant. I am going to have to grab one of these very soon and get it put together

There is also the APDS-6a thats mentioned in a few books about the Armageddon Wars - its basically a Chimera variant of the Destroyer.

For an easy renegade Ragnarok, could you not just stick a Defiler 'torso' on a Leman Russ/Chimera chassis?
