Subject: First Time Painter! - Any advice?

Hi all,
I have just started painting some Gretchins as practice and would appreciate any advice.
So far I have put on a base colour on the skin, clothes weapons etc and am really pleased with how it looks. I am using Vallejo Game Color paints.
Now, I really don't want to ruin the next step!! Should I be layering (eg the skin) , then washing, or the other way around? And then do I highlight?
I have a few citadel paints including Nuln Oil and a Flesh Wash.
It is the layering I am most worried about!!
Thanks

Pictures would help.
Usually I would do the base. then wash, than highlight up from there. All depends on the look your going for.

Pull out a piece of paper to practice some blending on. Start of with your base, then mix in a little bit of bleached bone (or equivalent). You'll see how it lightens the green without making it a pastel. Now mix in a little bit more bleached bone. You should be able to see a nice color gradiation on your piece of paper. Now take your wash Nuln Oil or the green, and apply it to the 3 shades you have on your piece of paper to see how it changes the color.
When you actually start apply this to your figure, remember that lighter blends of color will be more selectively applied with less paint on the brush and only to the higher areas of the model.

If you're a first time painter, my advice would be concentrate on brush control. Get the paint where you want it, don't go over the lines, and pay attention to the details on the model.
Only after you've got brush control down should you move on to washes, highlights and so on.

Best advice I can give is to not be afraid and just go for it. I take the Bob Ross approach. There are no mistakes, just happy accidents. And so, so many bravery tests...
Experimenting and getting a feel for things is the best teacher.

My advice would be simply to paint them and forget about all the fancy add-ons you mention. You need to learn the basics first and that includes mistakes!

Trial and error is your friend. I'm by no means a good painter, but I get better every painting session I have. Make mistakes, learn from them, and correct them next time. Just like any craft, it takes practice, practice, practice!

When I paint teeth, I usually paint the entire mouth white, then apply a dark brown wash. It's just a lot easier than picking out individual teeth. If I want to paint a display figure or something showoff-ey like that, I'd probably put a bit more effort into it, but for tabletop it works just fine!

Another easy idea for teeth is applying a thin yellow after the white. Yellow has terrible coverage in general, which you can use to your advantage to tint them unhealthy. White -> brown wash looks good too. If you don't want to use a wash or the teeth won't hold one (separate fangs, etc) you'll probably want to use a bonewhite.
