I'm so lost. I've tried a few and none seem to go right, but I was going with a brighter green route. So should I go a dead grass route? I can paint the rock to match the base as well.

I was thinking this- http://www.thewarstore.com/product26652.html

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

I think a dead/dying yellow. Or a mix of yellow and brown. But it's really a personal preference, green grass can grow un deserts and dead grass can be dead in deserts as well. So if this is a desert then green or yellow. If it's a wasteland yellow or brown.

yeah, dead grass is going to be better than green grass for that one.

Alternately, you can stick with the gravel theme and use larger rocks to break up the sand, rather than bits of plant life.
