I used a cheapo syphon feed airbrush from Harbor Freight, but just upgraded to Badger Patriot 105 ( $60 on Amazon). You really do get what you pay for. I wish I had gotten the Patriot first. I thought I'd need to get a .5mm conversion kit, but even with the stock .76mm, I can make very thin lines and tiny dots. It covers large areas quickly too, without having to switch between brushes. The Patriot's gravity feed is much cleaner, and easier to use. Clean up is crazy fast, just a rinse under the tap and the cup is clean. Then I shoot Windex through 2-3 times and I'm ready for my next color.
When I was looking into a new brush, everyone puts SO much emphasis on how thin a given brush can get. They all do fine. .5mm is what I aimed for as it's more forgiving with thinning ratios and can more easily shoot thicker paints like primers and Future.
I use an old Badger diaphragm compressor I bought off of Craigslist. My only complaint is that it moves all over the place since I have no way to strap it down (newer ones are probably better about that), and that it runs hot. The result of this is the moisture trap on the compressor only gets some of the moisture, and after a while, the air condenses in the hose and I get moisture in the AB. I just bought a secondary moisture trap to attach to the airbrush itself. Very inexpensive on Ebay, and also can help with grip.
