Subject: Programs for learning to play a Bass Guitar
Can anyone out there suggest a teaching setup/program that might be helpful in learning to play a Bass Guitar? Something like some DVD series or something?

I started playing the guitar with Rocksmith as it's great for picking up an instrument. I recommend using a book at the same time and looking up chords etc. on YouTube. I now usually use Guitar Pro to pick up new, easy songs.

I can also recommend YouTube tutorials.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used to play piano so I'm not too experienced with string instruments. Maybe I'll give Rocksmith a go just to get a feel for the instrument.

The best program I can think of is called "friends don't let friends learn bass", and it teaches all the important things, like how expert bass players should learn to play either lead or rhythm guitar, or else learn to sing or write so that they too can be a contributing member of the band.

hahahaha Nice
... you know I was just thinking maybe I should start with regular guitar instead of a bass

If "This Is Spinal Tap" teaches us anything, it is that bass guitarists have to compensate for something by wrapping a cucumber in aluminium foil and hiding it in their trousers.
Does Synthesia have a guitar version? You might want to look it up, if it does that could be a great way to learn on the cheap. Other than that I would also suggest Rocksmith.
And I thought the Bass Guitarist and Drummer competed for the title of wildest guy in the band?

The title is "easiest to replace".

pfft, guitarists are two a penny and easy to replace. If you find a good bass player or drummer hold on to them.
On topic. Its always worth paying for a teacher, they can spot your weak areas and help improve them. That said the basics can be self taught easy enough. If you can read music already then great, if not there is plenty of tab out there.
I just got myself a bone, I wish I had some idea where to start. Gonna have to be lessons for me.
Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

Yep, you're talking bollocks for a change. Guitarists are by far the easiest instrumentalists to find. Seriously, you are ridiculously, laughably, hilariously wrong. You are made of incorrect.
Nah, take up the bass, man! It's a cool instrument and you'll definitely be in demand. Despite what certain posters have said, bass is its own thing. It's a skill-set of its own. People who believe otherwise are just crappy musicians. Take it from me - I play bass, drums (+ other percussion instruments), guitar, keys, I am a classically trained vocalist, plus I have a degree in music, have had management and recording contracts, and have been performing various roles within bands for 16 years. Anyone who tells you that bass is just for people who can't cut it on 6-string is joking, or a joke.
Be warned though, it takes years to get good on the bass. The learning curve is much more gradual than say, kit. Groove is an elusive, almost mythical thing, and as a bassist you will need it in abundance. Start smoking pot.

I'm just sayin'... there's a reason it was called the "Page & Plant" tour, even though it was only Bonham who was deceased.

Singer/Songwriter Lemmy. Who also plays bass while he's doing it.
Favourite Lemmy Anecdote. Cos Lemmy is awesome.
Spoiler:
Sid Vicious tried to have lessons from Lemmy. Lemmy said he was unteachable. A couple of weeks later, Sid phoned Lemmy and said he was in the sex pistols...thats explains a fair amount...

2nded
Bass is great fun
Good bass players are hard to find - rhythm guitarists are everywhere, good lead guitarists are hard to find, good drummers are like rocking horse Good singer/songwriters are almost the holy grail.
But I've just learnt you can play slap on a guitar (I don't do more than 4 strings - even 5 is too complicated) so I'm still learning

wat
John Paul Jones is a phenomenal bass-player and multi-instrumentalist. Seriously, look him up on wiki. He's kind of a big deal.

Not a big enough deal to get invited back onto the tour. Bonham was dead. What was JPJ's excuse? (answer: Because 3 mil splits bigger 2 ways, and JPJ played bass)
