So there I was organizing my coin collection while browsing Dakka when I wondered if there were any kindred spirits lurking here with me. I really have no idea how popular such a pastime is these days but it would be nice to come across some other people and maybe get round to trading some monies!

If there are any of you out there let me know, if not I will just go back to my solitary existence!

EDIT: Seeing as there are a fair few collectors out there, feel free to PM me and perhaps we can work out some trades. I have a vast collection of foreign coins from my travels plus a lot of fancy Canadian quarters. Plus I could also assemble a full set of Canadian currency should you so wish!

My GBP collection is quite substantial seeing as I lived there for most of my childhood, I have some dating back to the 1800's!

Well trust me. it gets very addictive! And should you want to collect some older coins, I have a literal pile of old half crowns and pennies should you need any.

I have a bunch of coins collected throughout my military career....of course, you are talking about money coins, and the ones that I have have literally no monetary value, however my Gen. Petraeus coin should win me a few drinks

Well I was also talking about any type of coin. I have a bunch of millenium coins which are pretty cool (which reminds me, I must find the rest of them soon). Also those souvenir coins that you can get pretty much everywhere you go.

My brother collects coins and has been doing for about 30 years.
I think his goal is one of every year for all the uk coins and one of every type of foreign coin.

I collect transformers and 40k.

While I'm not a collector really I have accumulated some random coins. I have about 10$ in copper pennies, 50$ in silver dimes, another 50$ in other various all silver coins, most of the USA state coins, and some other various stuff including Susan B. Anthony's, .50c pieces, and like 75 silver dollars.

I also collect 2$ bills and have about 30+ of them.

The wife is a pretty big fan of coin collecting. I even made a thread a few years ago asking for trades of foreign coins on here. That helped her collection a bit

Same. I have a few coins left-over from vacations to strange lands like Chicago. They have Abe Lincoln on a coin up there!

I wouldn't really consider myself a coin collector, but I do try to hang onto a few coins and/or small bills from any foreign countries I've visited, if it's practical. I've got a few cool ones, like the Egyptian 25 piastre coins that have holes in the middle.

I worked at a casino years ago and collected odd coins or rare coins that passed through, in addition my Grandmother gave me her coin collection when I was a kid. The casino's coin counting machines have magnets to weed out the Canadian coins, but others would stick too.

My oldest coin is a King George from the 1790's, extremely worn condition though. Nothing is really worth much like no low or rare mints but worth their silver content if nothing else. The bulk of my collection is a couple dozen Silver Dollars (barbers late 1800's and walking liberties early 1920's). Silver makes a specific sound when it hits the counters, turns a lot of heads to those who know. From my casino days though I have plenty of steel war time pennies and the odd foreign coin (not US coins) that made it into a machines but got stuck on the magnets.

I have other stuff too, indian head pennies, mercury dimes, Franklin .50 cent pieces, buffalo nickles (all have the correct number of legs). All together the collection may have worth, but nothing is 'rare' in coin terms.

Paper money eludes me still. Silver certificates also crossed my path but I have none. The casino I worked at also had about 5 100 dollar bills with red lettering, I didn't have enough money to buy any of those up at the time. I am sure I would have spent it at the time anyways, I was in my early 20's.

I have maybe 2-3 coins. One medal about the monorail system shutting down, another bicentennial medal and then some arcade tokens (they've since either closed down or swapped to a card system).

Not really that impressive.

Unless you have a bank like the one in Harry Potter I don't think it counts! (Which would be incredibly cool, I always wanted a vault!)

I'm an avid collector of all kinds of junk, so I have whatever coins have caught my eyes over the years. When the metal values spiked last year I got rid of a lot of my old coins for a nice profit!

Mostly I collect stuff for historical value. I have a little stash of old Roman coins. I used to buy culls when they were cheap and clean them for a bit of armature archaeology. Found coins from Ancient Greece, Persia, and the reigns of Constantine, Caligula, Nero, and even Queen Zenobia.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

I have always wanted to get my mitts on some ancient coins, only problem is that where I live now has no detectable history whatsoever. I miss living in England and being able to take a trowel, dig a little hole in the ground and find half a Victorian teapot (true story btw, I swear my garden was the site of an outdoor dinner massacre or something, that's the only reason that could explain the volume of china managed to dig up). All you get when you dig around here is, well, mud, red mud at that.

I have a ton of silver and gold coins my grandfather willed to me.

They are more of an heirloom than a financial investment. Probably the exact opposite of what my grandfather had wanted.

I used to collect coins back in the day from all around, and now I have quite a bit that I'm not actually sure what to do with...

On the same note, I have bank notes too. Not as rare as I thought it was, but rare enough to make some people green with ennvy: the hungarian money before they became soviets, before they became nazis.

My mom works at a bank and so comes into rare money often. She found some 1920s 100 dollar bills and bought them thinking "Damn these are old and in great condition!" She calls her friend that owns a collectibles store and deals in old money and such. She tells him about the bills and says so are they worth anything?

It's a little bit off topic, but since all the coin-people seem to be congregating here I thought it might be a good idea to ask

I'm not a collector, so year/condition/etc isn't too important but I'm trying to get hold of a bunch of 5Yen coins, these ones:

I want about 30 of them to use as Ki tokens for my Bushido force, nowhere is going to trade currency for something as low as that (it's rare you can even trade for coins at all) so maybe someone here has got a bunch sitting around taking up space that they want to trade for british pound equivalent value (plus shipping)?
