I know that people say in the far future a 'bored' tau drone will come and destroy the [insert forever ongoing war] one day. I understand tau are a rapidly advancing race in terms of technology but what is this meant to mean? Who started it?
On a side note how long ago was it when the warp shut off the tau when they were still figuring out that fire hurts you?

You fool me once I'm mad.
You fool me twice, I don't really like you.
You fool me three times, your officially that guy.

As I know of it, the Tau aren't quite soulless like the Necrons are, but rather they've only recently gained sentience, and thus haven't had time to develop psyker a. As for the Drone thing, IIRC Tau drones only have a very rudimentary intelligence; basic tactical protocols, Friend or Foe Identification programs, things of that nature. Nothing that would give them the initiative to act alone like that.

I think the drone thing is just a joke intended to reflect just how fast the Tau are advancing.
I can recall how long before the current in-universe date the Tau were shut off by a warp storm. I know it lasted around 6000 years, and in that time they went from stone age to shiny-blue-laser-jetpack-age.
Between the warp storm clearing and now, there was the Damocles Gulf crusade and parts of Kraken hit them. So the warp storm cleared before those two events.

It is pretty much saying that the tau will develope to a point when one of their then sentient drones gets boredome, and destroys a huge current threat, just because it has nothing better to do and is advanced

If the drones become self aware then they will likely go tge route of.the iron men, self aware machines with no soul to protect them from possession.

Not sure about that. The Necrons are soulless robots and Chaos is scared gackless of them.

Not realy,...

Lords, Crypteks, lychguard, praetorians, overlords still have personalities and memories of their former lives,.. its just the lowly warriors/flayed ones and such that have become quite but not utterly soulles. Some still have a very little spark,.. though they cant do gak about it

They are not as soulleas as in the old fluff.

Maybe not in personality, yeah. I'm not really sure what I think about Newcrons. On the one hand, they are pretty awesome. On the other hand, they're definitely not Oldcrons, which were ten kinds of awesome.

When I said soulless, I meant in terms of footprint on the warp, which Necron's don't have.

Ah ok,.. i get it.

I somewhat agree with you. I certainly like most of the new cron units since the old army had almost only warrior looking models. The new ones like lychguard and stalker realy pimp up the army. Fluff wise i think they are awesome but they should be IMO, colder towards enemy. Dont even communicate with them, just appear and obliterate them plx...

On topic,

I think the Tau, unlike humans nowadays, will limit the drones to one function and one function only. I dont think they will develop AI's in such a way they become a threat. Tau has enough to handle atm.. Orks from one side, imperium on the other and then nids.... Not realy foes to take lightly... Now the first Tau cadre has declared themselves cast off the main empire (Farsight) Which takes quite a chunk out of their forces... Nah, the drones will probably stay like our robot vacuum cleaners we have now.. Only the can shoot/shield etc

Yeah, I don't think the Tau are going to have to worry about their drones rebelling any time soon. Those guys are just too simply made for that kind of autonomy.

The Tau also know about the problems the IoM had during the Age of Strife, so I assume they might know a little of what caused it, and could use it as a lesson. There's a quote I remember reading once, I think it's an Ethereal talking about humans and he says that at one point humans had technology beyond even the Tau's comprehension and understanding, so maybe the Tau are waaaay off in regards to being able to make AI comparable to the Men of Iron.

The only Chaos-corrupted Men of Iron we've seen are in a BL novel. It wasn't Chaos that caused the Men of Iron to turn against Humanity, that was Humanity's fault for using them as slaves.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Well I think that regardless if humans used men of iron as slaves or not, eventually the sentient machines will view themselves superior to the inefficient organics that created them.

In the singularity summit ( the place where people try to plan and philosophize for the eventual sentient machines that we create ) .

"The sentient AI does not love you nor does it hate you, it just thinks your atoms can be better used for something else"

This quote really fits the oldcron fluff well.
