With my new venture into Warmachine I decided to go full-bore and make my first table. This should hopefully give me a good setup at my house to get friends over where I can convince them to switch from 40k to Warmachine (or at least start playing both)

It isn't complete yet as I'm still working on getting all the snow added to the table and I still need a couple of house-like structures but here's where I am at currently:

It's a standard 4'x4' plywood table supported with a 1.5"x1" frame. I originally wanted to go with a lighter desert color, but being on a budget strictly kept to the materials I had on hand.

The snow as been the most difficult part of the process. Figuring out the right mixture of PVA/Water/White Acrylic Paint/Baking Soda is hard, but so far, its turned out fairly well. Hindsight, I should have went with a 6'x4' so I could have a dedicated "Staging" area for models and materials. But, I doubt this will be my first and only table

Should look nice with my Khador models

Don't care for the high vertical sided hills, but otherwise not too shabby.

Looks good.

I prefer those hills as sloped hills cause many more issues of places where models wont stand.

You can have blocks the same height of the hill to put under models to have them half on/off.

Looks great, cant wait to see it finished, but again i'm not fussed about the square sided hills, perhaps instead use a pile of crates or haybales.

Looks good. Well done.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

very nice one.
recently I made a table, too, but for simplicity I've just spray-painted a 120x120 wood board (one side green, one side grey).

Looks great, if a little empty.

It will be much better when you get those buildings ready.

Sloped hills are a royal pain because of model positioning. Its much better to have steep hills IMO. Yeah they arn't as cool but neither are chipped models.

I like the low sloped hills we've been using locally. They only get maybe an inch high in the center or just short, and the slope extends to there from the edge. Rarely an issue with models falling over and they look like actual hills.

You must have a predefined height for them then.

About hills, I think the best compromise between look and usability is making them steep, painting sides ground / rock.

I did mine this way and look very nice (imho):

The accepted standard in the Midwest meta is a hill is elevation, period. If your toe crosses the threshold onto that piece of hill terrain, you get the bonus. I'll have to get you some pictures of them next time I'm at the flgs.

But what about height and blocking LoS to models?

Typically, hills don't block LoS. And model height comes into play so incredibly rarely, it really isn't an issue.

Hills are a tactically interesting way to create LoS problems in warmachine however. And model height comes into play almost all the time. Maybe not so much for certain types of terrain, but for hiding casters or other units behind each other.

That's a base size thing though, not actual physical height. I think the one guy meant actually having a hill block LoS, which they don't, and the effect it has on your models physical height when standing on it. As said though, simply being on a hill gives a set LoS benefit, and terrain really is never built that I've seen in such a way that the height of a model behind it matters all that much.

If a hill is high enough it can block sight for some or all models. Terrain usually isn't designed with the specifics of warmachine in mind, no.

All the hills around here are tall enough to block LoS to small based models. And some have multiple heights to do the same thing.

Two inch tall hills are pretty huge hills. That's gotta be a pain to get models to balance on the edge of those, and a rough fall when they don't. And adding multiple levels to that? That's massive.

Thats why you have verticle sides and you used dice if they are hanging over.

Most people only have five dice, and a two inch hill is going to require like three of them for just one model. At that height I would Not use dice, that's way too unstable, I'd insist on blocks of wood made at the same height of the hill.

I have clear 1" square cubes that I carry around expressly to help balance on hills and other terrain.

Also, large hills with steep cliffs simply just become impassable terrain. /shrug. Blocking LOS and limiting movement options. Both things every board should have.
