Three Color Minimum
|
The usual method is earthy colors like greens and browns, however due to their avian heritage feel free to use birds for reference.
Also a major consideration should be how you want them complement/match your Tau units (common markings, themes, warpaint etc...) Google Images can be your friend for pictures of existing themes.
I'm personally a fan of blue themed Kroot like this but that of course depends on your main army colors.

Usually just a grey drybrush over black, with some browns for the bags, armor, and cloth, and some dark silver for the gun. Then a dark muddy wash like devlan mud and some lighter highlights.

Kroot are naked birds so painting them in a bird style scheme wouldn't be inappropriate.
3d foundry did theirs in orange. Personally, I'd have gone for a black/grey base instead of the reddish orange that they used. More contrast that way. Makes the model "pop".

I painted mine to fit my bases, to make them look more like they could change their skin colour at whim. I do a lot of desert bases so mine were just Tau Light Ochre, drybrushed Dheneb Stone (or whatever is the new equivalent) and then washed Gryphonne sepia. If it helps i could link some pictures?

I had some that I painted orange, with black markings like Gila Monsters, then highlighted with the spines and beaks in bone/white.

(I just traded them off, so I have no pics, sorry)

i actually painted mine just like I do Orks, which is (in old paint names) Dark Angels Green with highlights in Snot Green.

That's OK, BTW I am gluing them right now it is so frustrating to try to glue the arms together with the gun.

Yeah, they're some of GW's worst models. A pain to assemble, and even more of a pain to keep upright.
But anyway, the rule of thumb is to paint them with the same palette as your Tau and/or a palette that matches the basing.
It is fun to mix it up a bit. Say, you have Tau that are red armored, khaki clothed, and white sept markings. You can paint the Kroot Khaki-tan with red accents and white warpaint or quills. Basically, using a matching palette, but mixing around the importance of the colors you chose.

As others have suggested, natural colors help convey the look of a tribal group of warriors that rely on their environment to blend in. I went with brown skin on mine because Orks already have green covered.
It contrasts well with Tau armor, as seen in this model where I added some Tau technology. Firepower is correct in that, while having a completely different look to the Tau, it is important to choose a similar palette in order to unify your army.

Do you have any greenish white schemes like the one on gw. BTW it does look really good.
