I am starting this plog to record progress for various side-projects that may or may not fit into the other 'army' plogs.
Skalk Bloodaxe has a contest going, building a scenic terrain piece consisting of "rubble" made of junk, not so much bits and model pieces but actual found stuff.
I have an idea for a Chaos Altar of some kind, but will wait to start any assembly til I find some good debris. Like this piece off of one of my neighbor's cars I found this morning

Apparently this weekend is a busy one for the junk-pilers! There seems to be a lot of discussion about rust and weathering, which has gotten me up off my backside and into the YouTubes for some research.
I found a 3-part video series (by Mrs. Doubtfire?? LOL) that shows how to do rust and chipping with hairspray and salt.
Part 1 - prepping the sub-surface
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04RMOchGAS8
Part 2 - chipping away the top-coat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f39h5O6cV4E
Part 3 - shading and highlighting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHW45LYZPLw
and this vid shows how to make 2 washes that can add a 'patina' or tarnish effect (which looks more effective that the rust wash effect).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6OSyAT7-Ys
I am looking forward to employing these techniques and seeing how the rest of you develop your weathering skills.

Camkierhi - What a load of rubbish... Amazing!
Rogue Wolves - Its rediculous how much character you pack into those guys
Skalk Bloodaxe: I know those will be awesome when finished, but right now they look like crackers.

Pre-holiday update: it's time to get serious.
I started by taking that bumper-piece I found outside and cut a chunk out of one edge to give it a flat base.
Then I used my rotary tool to gouge out a channel in the 60mm base for the flat edge of the 'escape pod fragment' to rest on, as though it is partially buried in the earth. Following the gluing and pinning, I added some putty to fill in gaps and represent the pushed up earth.
The barrel in front there might be upside down... I haven't decided. I made 3 of these barrels in order to practice rust and corrosion effects before I start on the pod itself and my Flying Robot Daemon Prince.
In the following image you can see I have removed the barrel in order to add some small details inside the shell of the pod:
C&C welcome.

Friday update: working on laying down the rusty underlayer for the barrels. One more coat of browns and oranges, then let dry and hit them with hairspray and salt.
After that is dry I will paint two of them yellow (for bio-hazard and radiological hazard) and the one with buboes, bone - for practice on the Daemon Prince (you can see him in the background)

Spent the morning finishing up my Rust & Corrosion practice pieces. I now have a very good idea of how to incorporate these techniques into finishing this piece.

The junk pile project is undercoated
I have just hairsprayed and salted it, drying while I add this update and work on SWS.

The Junk Pile is nearly done. While I wait for the shades to dry so I can take the final pics I have decided to assemble the model for the next competition I am going to participate in:
Bebops Formula Paint Grand Prix: The Guardsman Challenge
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/567422.page
These are the pieces that I will be using:
There is a tight restriction on the actual model, but you can amp-up the base some...I haven't figured it all out quite yet, but it will involve a floor-hatch with some equipment beneath.
Here is the Guardsman himself:
Looking forward to getting going on this!

Thanks Gawdam, Bebop, I appreciate it. This is only my second shot at the hairspray/salt corrosion technique, still have some things to learn before I use it on my Daemon Prince

Your weathering techniques have taken such a surge forward that it makes Warp travel seem slow. This is going to affect all of your projects from this point forward. You've definitely reached the 'next level' in modeling. Wicked awesome work!

Rust, rot and weathering in that drum looks fantastic, and the whole piece comes together nicely.

Here are some WIP shots of the guardsman, I am just about to wash him with Nightshade Blue, which should both darken up the very pale blue basecoat and add some nice shading.
Also, his face and eyes are not quite done, I just picked up a new 5/0 brush for the nerve-wracking dotting-of-the-eye.

Here is the progress as of 9 Jan, luckily the deadline has been moved back as I got zip done since before Christmas:
I am going to freehand a unit number and some chevrons on the left shoulder armor
The right shoulder is going to get a unit logo/icon of some sort
C&C welcome

I have been busy with some real-life stuff, but I have been making progress on some side-projects and trying out new techniques. For these "Ladies of the Night" from Reaper I used some layering techniques and wet-blending. I was going for a semi-transparent look of sheer fabric and working on non-caucasian skin tones. The two gals in the center were subject to two different processes/color-mixing schemes, didn't quite turn out as well as I would have liked.
The model on the right is from Heresy ( link ), will be used in my Narrative Campaign as an Inquisitorial agent (spy).
Next up we have some more models from Heresy, the Inspectors:
These guys and gal work for a certain ruthless, galaxy-spanning corporation. They are metal and I mounted them on slotted bases for painting. I am working on converting the deck-plate bases you see in the foreground for their final basing.
Finally, I got inspired while reading The Word Bearer Omnibus recently, so while I was waiting for the models to arrive in the mail I started working on a counts-as HW team for the squad of Ad Mech I am putting together. The weapon-mount is magnetized so I can switch out between Lazcannon, Autocannon and Heavy Bolter.
As always C&C welcome.
