I'm new to 40k and have never played a game before, I got a hive tyrant to lead my tyranids, but I don't know how I should equip him. Any nid players please tell me what you think is the best way to make the tyrant.

It is going to depend on what you're going for with him...but I find that the most competitive armies use flying tyrants with heavy venom cannons andhe old adversary special rule...that's just what I've experienced though and it's going to depend on what you want from your army and your hq's

Never venom cannon!!! Twin linked devours.Or if you want cc HT take bone sword lash wipe he Venom cannon is not even that good at taking out light mech and is useless vs heavy more offen than not. The stranglethorne cannon is ok vs hordes army's .

I can get on board with this, if only because the twin link devoures get you brain leech worms for 10 points less

Two twin-linked devourers (which you will need to convert, so get out your search-fu). Give him wings too if you can manage it.

Tyrants are fairly good at close combat without having to take the bonesword/lash whip combo. It would seem a shame to lose the extra 6 twin linked strength 6 shots that you could otherwise have with the above combo.

Heavy venom cannon isn't very reliable. Stranglethorn cannon won't get as many hits on target as the devourers (and it isn't any better at killing things).

OR

Make him the Swarm Lord.

Dual-devourers are good not only because you get a ton of twin-linked S6 shooting, but by putting Wings on the HT it can get the Skyfire rule making it by far the best Nid counter to other flyers. Many people use the fleshborer hive arms from the Tyrannofex kit as devourers, which is much easier than converting them into one pair of arms.
Then if you have enough points, throw on the Preferred Enemy bubble and keep the HT near units that roll lots of dice, such as devilgaunts or gargoyles.

The fleshborer hive is a pretty good option, thanks xttz. I personally like the over-and-under conversions that have been going around for a while.

If you can't decide you can always look into magnets, but currently the standard as mentioned before is 2 sets of Devourers and wings.

Ive only played a single game with my nids, but I ran two Flyrants with 2x TL Devourers and already im in love. The flyrants alone accounted for a good 40% of my kills. They destroyed my friends night scythes in 2 turns (one of them started on the field thanks to his C'Tan).

Go wings and 2x TL devourers.

One downside - the Tyrant box doesn't come with any devourer bit. They're only in the Carnifex box.

You can convert any devourer bits from Warriors or Termagants for Tyrants though.
