I am buying either Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition for $30 or Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning for $20.

Which should I buy? Which is most worth the cost?

I've got a brand new, essentially top-of-the-line gaming pc, so specs aren't an issue.

Both are worth the cost. If I had to highlight the differences, I'd say Kingdoms of Amalur has better action while Dragon Age: Origins has better roleplay.

I'd change that to Kingdoms of amalur has better combat and the rest is all crap, including story, mechanics and progression.

The reviews that I've seen have related Amalur to the Fable series, had it been done right.
I can only hope that Dragon Age is somewhat similar to a fantasy version of Mass Effect (I have faith in BioWare that it is a good game and I have played the pen and paper rpg version)

Might I suggest Guild Wars 2?

It fits what you're looking for, just had a price reduction, and has seemingly endless playtime.

I like Dragon Age a lot more. I have 30 hours into Amalur, and I had to force myself. I have 252 into Dragon Age.

Having played them both, I think Dragon Age was the better game.

I also liked Dragon Age 2. Let me try and explain this without spoilers.

Dragon Age had really good, solid mechanics. Challenging without being too hard. The problem with this, just as with NWN and so on, is that having a enjoyable experience relied heavily on the player liking the personalities of the NPC characters that formed their team. IMO it was way to easy to form a team that while effective, were unpleasant to play with due to their interactions being acrimonious, or just plain having weak characters.

Dungeon Age 2 was really, really dumbed down, mechanic-wise. On the other hand, the teammates were vastly more compelling and interesting and engaging, so I wound up liking that substantially more.

I liked them both.

Kings of Amalur, though... I found that to be a watered-down WoW MMORPG knockoff. I did not get very far in it before losing interest.

Glad that I made the choice that I did.
I have a 21+ hour long train ride coming up and I plan to spend the entirety of it gaming.

Dragon Age Originis is one of my favorite games ever, so I think you made the right choice

However I do understand the NPC problem. Most of the NPC's I think Bioware wanted us to relate with, ie the ones that hate everything, take a skeptic view on everything, sleep with anything that moves and are generally mean spirited were the ones I ended up hating with a passion. Looking at you Morrigan. Where as the "up tight", religious types, who we were supposed to not like until we made them "hardened" I actually really liked as people.

We're watching you... scum.

I really can't advocate dragon age. It's got a good story, but having to pause play pause play pause play every fight to ensure nobody does anything stupid destroyed that game for me.

Looks like you already have but there you go.

DA:O is probably one of the top fantasy RPGs of the last couple years.

DA is fine. You just need to adjust tactics to get people where you want them.

If you really liked how different guild wars 1 was from other similar mmo's (or CRPG's) at the time, you may not like guild wars 2. Its worth waiting for open weekends they have to try it.

I pretty much preordered all the orginal Guild Wars + expansions (exception being eye of the north I got on sale), to being very disapointed in guild wars 2 (I have no plans to buy it).

Guild Wars 2 didn't disappoint me at all. It exceeded my expectations.

I'm a bit surprised at the bile spewed at Kingdoms of Amalur myself. It's not a bad game by any means.

Because it wasn't a 90%+ game, and was instead a lowly 80%+ game.

80% is, as you know, equivalent to basically failing.

Meh, I had a lot more fun with Amalur than I had with the dead space series and that series is apparently a beloved franchise that can do no wrong.

Dragon Age, by a long shot. It's the pinnacle of RPG in the current generation.

Do not play Dragon Age 2 though, it's utter trash.

Personally I swiftly bored of Amalur and switched to Dragon's Dogma and even that didn't hold my attention as much as Dragon Age did.
Also Dragon Age has more scope for modding.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Didn't Amalur start life as a MMO-RPG, and then changed into a single player game a way into development? If so, it would explain the number of 'kill x' quests in the game.

Agree with what one poster said above though, Demon Souls (or whatever the new one was called, I always forget) is a really great game.

This one... I just never got. I tried Skyim twice and just failed to be captured by the story. I don't own a copy, but my friend is pushing me into getting the legendary one.

But statistically yeah, I think I could recommend Skyrim even though I didn't like it because every other friend I have that has tried it has loved it.

I liked Skyrim, but it's not some sort of godsend like the ME series was. [/trolololololololol]

I've been enjoying DA:O
I'm maybe 4 hours or perhaps a little more in.
I like the Play-Pause-Play system.
Most of the characters do seem annoying in their attitudes and constant skepticism.

Extremely plain characters, little to no story progression, hardly different endings, very repetitive environemnt (2 caves for the entire game), gaping logic flaws (a city with 99% crime rate, former dead characters suddenly being alive again, city being mostly abandoned), endless filler combat, obvious catering to the 16- crowd, immensely dumbed down combat system...need I go on? :/
