I'm new to Warmachine. I picked up the books and some models and built myself a 15 piont Cryx list using the starter box. There's one more thing I wanted to pick up before I start throwing down - a token set. I can't seem to find one anywhere, however. So, what's the deal? I see lots of pictures of these great Cryx token sets, all glowy green and what not. No stores seem to carry them, however. As I understand it, the tokens came out with MK II. Were they a limited release? Can anyone point me to an online store that still carries them?

Do you mean these tokens? http://www.thetrolltrader.com/catalog/warmachine-warmachine_box_sets__accessories/cryx_mkii_tokens_91049/2666

They shouldn't be that hard to buy. They're usually hanging around places that sell Warmachine stuff.

Thank you!

Are they generally expected to be played with? There seems to be a lot of bookeeping required. You certainly have to have 'something' to track effects with, right?

It's really just anything. I know a few friends who use those little shiny pebbles for focus and a piece of paper for spells that they shuffle around behind units, another uses little plastic hamburgers and hot dogs for his fury and uses the upkeep tokens and what not for spells, it's really up to the player, as long as they have something to track effects.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

There are a ton of good alternatives out there to the official ones if you want to get really fancy with your tokens, objective markers etc.

Advanced Deployment seems to be the most popular of them: http://store.advanceddeployment.com/

But then, there is also the Warcogs/Warclaws stuff: http://www.discountgamesinc.com/hobby-supplies-and-accessories/tokens-and-markers.html

The standard token sets have a variety of markers tailored to the faction - like the Cryx one has a bunch of corrosion and soul tokens, the Khador one has shield wall and stationary tokens and stuff like that. They also have generic Spell tokens that you can write the name on with a marker, as well as Upkeep tokens for upkeep spells and stuff like that.

The main problem we've run into is the sets don't have enough tokens for effects like stationary or sometimes knockdown, because some things cause a ton of that (like Sorscha's feat or the Woldwrath's AoE knockdown on its normal melee attacks). We work around that by putting any other token next to the affected models upside down to represent it.

Of course, you don't have to use those sets. You could make your own, and a lot of people do just use pretty stones or whatever to represent focus and fury.

Also, I would recommend getting some other kind of bead to use for Focus.I do not like the Focus counters in those token sets as they are harder to tell how many are on someone when you stack them all up. Much prefer glass beads for that.

I tend to scatter mine behind my caster (in an ordered manner if you get what I mean, just not stacked, ranked up is probably a better word for how I do it). It makes it easier for all involved, and also stops me having to gingerly pick one off the top for every buy/boost and try not to topple the tower (I can be quite clumsy).
