Okay so first off, Hello everybody! I'm SnaiLMaiL and im happy to of finally joined Dakka Dakka. However Im new to the world of war gaming and have barely started. Hobbies like this are my life and this one i would especially like to start.

BUT let me explain my true problem quickly for those of you who just want to help:

I have purchased my first ever Space Marine tactical squad as directed by staff workers at my local wargaming shop. While being stared down by a bunch of Yu-Gi-Oh players i came to realize i need to figure out what my colors should be.

Codex Grey- Base
Mechrite Red- Shoulders
White- Trim
However i also found an army on Dakka Dakka called the "Patior Angelica". I really liked these as well:
White- Base
Mechrite Red- Shoulders
Gold- Trim

QUESTION: Is it appropriate to have my SM "infantry" as the first scheme and my assault squad or special classes as the second scheme? Or is that against some color code or something? Granted it is not an actual chapter but they are complimentary, no? (Btw i was thinking about calling my chapter "Vendetta Angelica" or something like that. What do you think?"

Hello and welcome to Dakka.

Honestly, they are your miniatures, you can do whatever you like with them

My advise would be one of two things.

1. Paint up a couple of marines in both colour schemes, to see which one, you prefer the look of, enjoy painting most etc.

2. If you are really big on the fluff side of the hobby, and want to devolop your successor chapter even further, than why not write up a reason as to why different squads have different paint schemes i.e Tacticals to Assualt marines etc.

If you are going to go for number 2, I would try find a common core to the paint scheme for all squads, to help unify your army.

Good luck, and happy gaming

^^this is good advice. Also do you know what kind of space marines you want to play? there are many different codexes like space wolves, blood angels etc. i assume you want to play vanilla (regular) marines. if you have the codex (or when you get it) its got alot of info about the markings. and yes many chappters of space marines have a very different ways of denoting a marines' role based on armour and there is no necessary guideline to follow, especialy since they are yours. welcome to dakka!

Hmmm...i see. Still shaky on the subject, but of course i am one of those people who want to avoid looking silly with grey and white marines. Although i will try out the colors and see which one i like best (maybe both still who knows)and fluff up my own chapter from there.

Thanks for the support so far Eldercaveman & Largeblastmarker!

There are numerous online army painters that let you see, roughly, how a color scheme would look like. They're mostly on bolter and chainsword though.

As to your actual question, there is no color code (unless you want one). They're your chapter of space marines, you make all the rules for them.

For a canon example of non-matching color schemes, the Dark Angels have a normal dark green color scheme, but their terminators are in bone white.
