I am starting my second army. My first army is a Tau army I started back in 2002. I decided it was time to try something different and completely opposite, so I went with BT.
Anyway, my BT army will be based on the 10/0 factor, which I learned about here on dakka. (Coolness: 10, Combat Effectiveness: 0). It is not really meant to be super competitive, I just want something I can play with, have fun, and hopefully win at least every now and then. I am creating a BT army with the things I find cool. Now, despite having started back in 2002, I am a 40k noob. (Done mostly fantasy crap.) So I will be asking for some noob feedback.

Here's what I am thinking:

HQ
- Emperor's Champion
- Grimaldus + Retinue (3 Cenobyte Servitors)
Thoughts: EC because he's just always there. Grimaldus because he seems fun. Simple as that. I also have Helbrecht that I could swap in when I feel like it.

Elites
- Venerable Dreadnought (Venerable b/c that's what I found for cheap. Not quite sure what the differences are.)
- Terminator Squad,(Lightning Hammers, Storm Shields)
Thoughts: Dread for long distance firepower and harassment. Terminators for getting into CC and cause some major damage, while at the same time being able to soak up a lot of damage I am not sure on the hammer/shield choice though. Considering lightning claws or power fists. How do they compare?

Troops
- Crusader Squad x Maxed* (in LRC), Powerfist, Bolt Pistol, Flamer - *(If I use Grimaldus as Master of Sanctity, he will be in there too with retinue. So fewer Initiates.)
- Crusader Squad x 10 (in Rhino), LasCannon, Plasma Gun
- Crusader Squad x 5 (on foot), LasCannon, Missile Launcher - Objective Defenders
5-man LRC squad for charging straight ahead and getting into CC. 5-man Rhino squad for some versatile firepower. 10-man squad for long rage harassment. Comments very welcome on troop choices/configurations.

Fast Attack
- Assault Squad
- Land Speeder Typhoon
Assault squad....I just really like these guys. I've heard they are kinda...."meh" though. Landspeeder for mobility/harassment.

With upgrades, etc. it should come out to roughly 1900 pts. Giving myself a little wiggle-room to stay under 2,000.
Comments, suggestions, etc. welcome!

Where were you going to put Grimaldus and the EC?

I would recommend just running Grimaldus as a Master of Sanctity (keep the retinue) and giving him a teleport homer. Stick him in the LRC with a maxed out Crusader squad.

Having 5 Initiates in an LRC seems like a waste. You will want to max that cargo out.

Put a maxed squad of initiaties, well 9, with a meltagun and a power weapon in the drop pod and put the EC with them.

Having a smaller squad with a lascannon in the backfield seems like a good choice to sit on an objective. But if they get shot, they will RZ away from the objective. so put them behind the obj. marker.

Venerable dread has better WS and BS, and for a super cheap upgrade you can give it tank hunters. reroll to pen vehicles.

But the teleportert homer will allow your termies to deep strike without the drop pod and not scatter.

Thanks for your comments. Yeah I will definitely max out the LRC with troops. I made some changes in my list above according to your suggestions.

No problem. I also believe that termies can no longer take a drop pod.

And I would also recommend picking up a codex if you dont have one. It will discuss the differences between the thunder hammer and lightning claws. But the TH/SS combo is going to be the best for BT.

And the LRC has a larger capacity than 10, so you can bring some more with you.

Templars are poised to be rolled into the Vanilla Codex next month (see N&R for details), so I'd not buy anything just yet.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

My BT codex is being shipped to me as we speak. So termies cannot use drop pods?

No because they can deep strike on their own.

Nice. Updated list again.
So, how bad are the BT assault squads?

I have never used them, but they are a mobile unit that can run up and get in your face quickly, good for BT. Also nice is that they can jump over and through difficult terrain.

But essentially I think some of the negative comments about them is that they have the same stats as initiates, and arent a troop choice. Also they cost more points than another initiates blob.

That being said I would still run them, and would even deep strike them. Although the deep strike should not be right next to the enemy, because you cant charge on a deep strike!!! aaah! but it would instead be behind some cover. then you can jump over it an assault on that next turn.

Some better stats would be nice, to set them apart I guess.

Our assault marines can be specialized in ways that a lot of other codices can't do, such as storm shields or melta bombs on every model. They sometimes do well, but they're also just very costly for not a whole lot of benefit compared to a normal Initiate squad. If you took 5 with melta bombs and a fist or sword, they might do pretty well, but putting more points in than that isn't great.

If only I could make up my mind

Melta bombs and fists. I like that idea.

Comes out to like 140 points with melta bombs and a fist. It'd take a lot of maneuvering to get them to do something though.

You should always take assault marines... 10 man unit with a chaplain, re-rolls on the charge with any unit is worth it imo.

I try to take at least 2 HQ's... generally a marshal and chaplain along with an emperor's champion, but two chaplains are beneficial as they can take different approaches.

Accept any challenge, No matter the odds
