This is a 1200 pt list that I'll be playing in a 2v2 this weekend...I'll be allied with a Grey Knights player. I figured my job would be to provide long-range fire support and hold objectives while the GK crusade all over the place. I have about 240 pts left and I'm not sure what to put in.

HQ- Chapter Master with Armor Indomitus/Primarch's Wrath- 200 (I know this is expensive, but I think it's fun. He'll go with a tac squad and try to claim objectives with them)

TROOPS: two 10-man tac squads with Lascannon and Flamer, Veteran Sergeants with power swords and melta-bombs. Attached to vanilla Razorbacks. -250 a piece, so 500

HEAVY: two 6-man squads, 1 with 4 Plasma Cannons, 1 with 4 Missile Launchers. -130 a piece, so 260

The plan will be to keep the heavy squads/lascannon tacs in the backfield amid cover to fire across the board. Razorback squads will keep at the flanks and move in to hold objectives that the GK's clear.

If you're primarily shooting and holding objectives, why bother with vet sgts , power swords and melta bombs on your tacs? (honest question)

Good question regarding the power swords/bombs....I guess I just felt like they're there "just in case". Might make sense to get rid of it though...that's 60 points saved. Good call.

On further analysis I think I'll make the sergeants vanilla and pick up a Thunderfire, which I believe leaves me with 200 pts. I think I should use them to invest in something that keeps my gunline safe from assaults/deepstrikes. What works best for that? Sternguard?

Using your list as a base and going to 1200 points might I suggest this;

Chapter Master (Artificer Armor, Armor Indomitus)

10 Tacticals (Lascannon, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon (or AssCannon)
10 Tacticals (Lascannon, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon (or AssCannon)

7 Assault Marines (2 x flamers, pair of Lightning claws on the sgt)

5 Devastator Marines (4 plasma cannons)
5 Devastator Marines (4 Missile Launchers)

Thunderfire Cannon

This is 1199 points.

The Assault marines can stay back to protect your gunline (extra attack in combat, paired LC's on the sgt) (cheaper than sternguard as well).

The flamers on the tacs are ok, but not needed (long range Las + short range flamers in a shooting squad don't mix).

The TFC is great to have. And the bonus techmarine to bolster defenses is a huge + to your gunline.

I'm sure others will have other options to make it even better.

If you are holding objectives, sniper scouts might be a good idea.
Since you are camping, definitely load up on long range death:
Typhoon speeders, Thunderfire cannons and of course Stormtalons are an option.
If you are not dead set on the Chapter master, Tigurius would be way better to buff your defence.
Since the Grey knights will move upfield, Grav centurions can also move up behind them and camp midfield.

On the above list, i would seriously consider naked sternguard veterans instead of the assault squad.
I do not think there is a unit that can defend better a bolstered ruin than stermies, since they can bypass 4+ armor from 30" away
