The Kickstarter for one of the spiritual successors to City of Heroes launched today, and seems to be doing well in their first 24 hours with over 1/3rd of their goal raised.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/missingworldsmedia/the-phoenix-project-city-of-titans
City of Heroes was my introduction to MMOs, and other than a break I took to do the WoW raider thing in TBC, I played roughly from launch til it's closing. Of all the successors this one seems to be the most in tune with the spirit of the original game, and I have high hopes for it's success. For a group of volunteers they've done extremely well in the year plus now so since the announcement that City of Heroes would close, and especially in the 11 months since it became apparent that all efforts to save the original game would be ignored by NCSoft.
Tony V of paragonwiki posted this on the project today and I thought it was a good read. I remember some of those small games studios from back in the day, and how they seemed to work magic with so few people. City of Heroes had one of the most involved communities, and it was not uncommon to be able to interact with the head developers personally, either through the forums, social media, or at conventions. You could really tell they cared about what they were doing, and that their community was important to them. My hope is that with the volunteer studio that spirit of community can once again come together in the online gaming world, and I wish the volunteers luck. I'll be watching closely and ready to get into their game during their early release period.

I played varying amounts of City of Heroes for eight years, so I'm interested to see what comes of this. I'm not in a position to contribute to the Kickstarter, and even if I were I'd be hesitant to do so, but it doesn't look like they'll have much trouble reaching their goal.

This would be really cool if I wasn't bored with superheroes. Most of them anyway, I still love the Batman characters and some of the Superman ones. But mostly just the ones where he almost dies or goes crazy, because those are fun.
What was I here for again?

That looks really badass. If this government shutdown nonsense gets resolved soon enough for me to back it, I will.

I'm definitely backing this. Unfortunately, I'm limited to the $75 one. Not the design your own weapon one, which is what I want.

Neat. I might get a basic level of support, just enough to have a copy of the game. Dunno. I have bills to pay.

Thanks for posting this up - I've had a close eye on this and as a former CoH player I'd have done it sooner had I thought of it. Its premature demise really was an injustice.
...and yes, of COURSE I'll be contributing just as soon as I've budgeted how much I can feasibly throw in.

Only 60k away from their target now. I'm glad to see the interest in this. I'm still debating on just how much I'm going to be able to commit, I'd like to go in for the special badge as that was one of my favorite things about the old game, but not sure I have that much extra money to put in. I'll at least want my Phoenix aura.

I wish I had enough money to spend to get a custom clothing thing put in. 3000 is waaay out of my ballpark. I'll probably settle for ten bucks.
