First off, the "cheese" from miniwargaming batrep you talked about was illegal. He shot his grav guns AND his bolters on those bikes, wildly inflating his amount of firepower because he thought that was how it worked. Second, that was the worst nid setup ever No screening for the big bugs that would pretty much detonate and take half his troops with them, for the most basic of 5+ cover saves that would have negated 1/3 of the wounds. Third, don't be a bandwagoner. Space wolves are still very competitive with the correct builds, jaws is still badass, they have divination still, long fangs are great, and grey hunters with pods are still super good.
In my experience, if you escalate your regular army to meta maxing cheese, people follow suit to compete around you. Then your all stuck playing cookie cutter lists nobody wants to run and stopped having fun with 20 games ago. Also white scars is just as vunerable to things that kill marines anyway, like helldrakes, no cover from tau, and others. yes moving grav guns are good, but your at a lesser model count than say a drop pod marine army, who if they turtled their shooty stuff behind and aegis, and dropped 3 sternpods on turn one would eat about 75 precent of that force there.
