Beyond don't buy questionable eBay lots you mean?
Bits sellers for the missing pieces, if they've been superglued then *maybe* freeze them to break the joins so you can clean them up, if they've been poly cemented then there's nothing you can really do, as it actually melts the plastic. In some cases you might be able to file or trim them smooth, but I've had some eBay purchases which I only bid on thanks to creative photography that have either ended up in the bin or the "I'll make some terrain with this one day" pile.
