Hello everyone, me and some friends are in the process of making a 40k gaming board (foamboard) and we have a river but are not sure what to use to simulate water. Ive heard that clear resin (or something like that) works well but we are not sure where to pick up some cheap or what kind to get exactly. Any help is appreciated!

You can get stuff like this, not exactly sure what it is made of but it is pretty readily available from model shops and such and there are a ton of tutorials on how to use it.

Edit: I'm not 100% sure that link works properly, so here's a picture:

Easiest place to get water effects is a store that sells model trains. Oh, and remember that the stuff shrinks A LOT. A full bottle of water effects makes about half a bottle of solid resin. Apply in very thin layers (thickness of about half a centimetre max)

For this one, you linked the water effects. Our river is more stagnant and wont really be moving. Would it be better to get the Realistic Water instead?

Yes, if you choose to go with something marketed to hobbyists. Water Effects, silicone sealant (clear caulk), and gloss gel medium are all relatively thick - it's what makes them sculptable for emulating moving water, but renders them impossibly tricky to lay down in smooth, even coats for still water. You want something pourable, like Realistic Water.

I suggest considering non-hobby brand products, as well, if you want to save money. As with most dedicated products, modelers figured out how to do it with readily available tools and materials, first. Envirotex (Lite) is one popular alternative - it's a pourable resin ("reactive polymer compound," as they call it - doesn't emit excessive heat while curing, as many resins do, making it safe for use over foam and other sensitive materials) that will cure to a clear, high-gloss, and nearly bulletproof finish (it's used as a high-wear coating on bars, counter tops, etc). With the 32oz. kit, you get double to amount for only slightly more money (~$30 vs. $24 for 16oz. of Realistic Water, which shrinks to further reduce the comparative coverage).

Hmmmm, ill look into that as well. We already have part of it filled in a while ago but cant find any more of what we used so I dont think we need too much, but im worried that the 16oz bottle of RW might not be enough since it shrinks.
