I love Tyrannic war veterans. Just the idea behind them. As opposed to waiting for the supposed supplement; which may or may not ever happen; I want to get going on creating a whole army of vets from the 1st Tyrannical War.

And who better to paint up UM blue to represent them than Grey Knights? They've all got instant-death causing CC weapons for those big nasty TMCs, they've got incinerators, their basic trooper has a storm bolter to deal with hordes of little gribblies and dreadknights are a lot better at fighting monstrous creatures than dreadnoughts!

Problem is, I don't know GK very well; and although I have the codex, I need help carrying a fluffy and effective force of bug hunters.

So, I submit to you to help me create a force of T war vets! What units are must-takes? I'm thinking at least one purifier squad with incinerators in a rhino, and at least one shunting Dreadknight (are doom fists force weapons?). Other than that I need your help! Exaltation to all who chip in...

If you're trying to do a UM chapter that's fluffy...You wouldn't have Dreadknights. You wouldn't have interceptors. You wouldn't have halberds at all, or force weapons(or even power weapons) on ever person. You wouldn't have stormbolters on everyone and their mom. You wouldn't have assassins or inquisitors...You'd pretty much have terminators, strike squads, the vehicles, and dreadnoughts. And the UM certainly don't have random writing on their armor about demons.

If you're looking at fluffy, I'd just go SM and paint them to represent the vets honestly.

I think you would be better doing a sm army but painting them deathwatch colours? Take Pedro as your count as commander, (some random deathwatch commander) so you can have sternguard as troops and then go crazy with sternguard as your vets or just use sternguard models for your tacs etc as they look awesome in deathwatch scheme.

Exalted; but have some imagination people! Haven't you ever seen a conversion? They don't have to have inquisition iconography! And wouldn't a fighting force adapting to Tyranids want ID causing weapons and volume of fire? As for the Dreadknight > dreadnought thing; 1) the conversion would be awesome and 2) I'd rather not have an AV to get smash attacked. A W characteristic is much more welcome especially when thy can be armed with Nid friendly force weapons and heavy incinerators for fun.

Yes you can convert no ones doubting that man, but the workload will be astromonical, you would have to remove all greyknights insignia of all models and find some way of covering the inscriptions on all the models aswell

Stalwart Strike Squad Grey Knight

Having recently finished reading "Deathwatch " novel I have this irresistible feeling that I want to add something like "Talon" squad in my Grey knights army. I 'm not gonna lie it won't be competitive but I really like the fluff behind this..But as you already might know GK are the military section of Ordo Malleus and not Ordo Xenos and here the fluff is gonna be contradicting is it not ?? I'm trying to build a list (probably 1.5k points) with as fluff wise units as possible . So having said that (plus the fact that I know very little about Tyrranic wars) here is what I think the list should look like :

GK primary detachment:

Hq:
Ordo Xenos Inq w/ Power armor + NDH + ulumeathi plasma syphon + rad grenades + phychotroke grenades + master lvl 1 (Divination) 103

Troops:
10x GKSS w/ 2x Psycannons + 1x NDH + Psybolt Ammo 250
Henchmen Squad of 3x Warrior Acolytes w/ bolters in a Razorback w/ TL assault cannon + psybolt ammo 100

Fast Attack:
Stormraven w/ TL LC + TL MM 205

Heavy Support :
Dreadnought w/ 2x TL autocannons + psybolt ammo + searchlight 136
Dreadnought w/ 2x TL autocannons + psybolt ammo + searchlight 136
Dreadnought w/ TL Heavy flamer + DCCW with build in heavy flamer + psyflame ammo 130

SM allied detachment with Red Hunters (Forge World) chapter tactics :

Hq:
Librarian w/ Power armor + Force Sword + Bolt Pistol + master lvl 2 (don't really know what powers to generate from) 90

Elites:
5x Sternguard Squad w/ 1x Heavy Flamer + 1x Melta gun + 2x Combi-Melta 160

Troops:
5x Tactical Squad w/ Heavy Bolter + Veteran Sergeant with bolt pistol + chainsword + melta bombs 95
5x Tactical Squad w/ Heavy Bolter + Veteran Sergeant with bolt pistol + chainsword + melta bombs 95

Inquisitor + Librarian + Sternguard and the PsyfleDread go into Stormraven (Red Hunters treat GK as allies) , GKSS deep strike (may combat squad so that they also follow Deathwatch kill-team doctrine) , Tactical Squads placed on / rush to Objectives while Dreadnoughts rain down supporting fire from behind .. Henchmen also try to claim middlefields Objectives while Razor shoots its way there ..

Of course you 'll have to paint the army black with left arm silver so they look like Deathwatch . I don't know if the above list is close to what you are looking for regarding fluff and/or playstyle .. tell me what you think and hope this helps

Well, the ID comes from force weapons and the fact that GKs are psykers. I'm fairly certain that nearly all of the tyrannic war vets aren't pskyers. As far as a dreadknight being used as a dreadnought thing... you'd be better off using a dreadnought to avoid counts-as confusion. Honestly, it feels more like you wanting to use the GK codex for ultramarines rather than use C:SM to represent them, which, IMHO represents tyrannic war veterans much closer.

Except models can't ride in allies transports, even if they're battle bros.

You are absolutely right that C:SM represents them closer; because they're Ultramarines! If I were a fluff Nazi, I wouldn't be suggesting this. I want to use the GK dex because they are so effective at fighting Nids; and paint them UM colors.

I started the thread to ask about tactical list building with the GK dex; fitting an anti-bug theme; not asking for a fluff discussion.

I'd go a standard GK build then.

Psycannons are your friend, as are terminators. Against FMC you'll want a gatling psylencer or two to try to get some grounding tests. Aside from that, it's honestly a fairly standard list.

When you post about the fluff and ask for help on making a 'fluffy' tyrannic war vets list, we have to offer input on the fluff aspect too, it's part of the nature of the internet.
