Oh I remember just a couple years ago, Space Wolves were top of the pack, but know with all the new Xenos books, new Marine books taking point costs down, flyers everywhere, it's getting harder and harder for SW to stay competitive. I know many people are running with Guard Blobs and abusing Njall or Rune Piests, but this isn't that kind of list. I was trying to make an emphasis on speed and firepower. I feel like this list can take on just about anything if played right, but would love to get some feedback from all the Space Wolf (& Imperial Guard) players out there about what I could change to make the list more competetive. It's going to entered into a campaign style series of games at my local gaming store, so I will have little opportunity to change the list after it get's underway. (list can be changed once to be specific)

SPACE WOLF (primary detachment) - 1280 points

HQ - Rune Priest, Chooser of the Slain
Troop 1 - Grey Hunters x10, Rhino, Plasma-Gun x2, Wolf Standard
Troop 2 - Grey Hunters x10, Rhino, Plasma-Gun x2, Wolf Standard
Troop 3 - Grey Hunters x10, Plasma-Gun x2, Wolf Standard
Fast Attack - Thunderwolf Cavalry, Thunderhammer, Storm Shield
Heavy 1 - Long Fangs x6, Missile Launcher x5
Heavy 2 - Long Fangs x6, Missile Launcher x5
Fortification - Aegis Defense Line, Quad Gun

IMPERIAL GUARD (allied detachment) - 720 points

HQ - Company Command Squad, Chimera, Flamer x4
Troop 1 - Veterans, Chimera, Melta x3
Troop 2 - Veterans, Chimera, Melta x3
Fast Attack - Vendetta Gunship x2 (squadron)
Elite - Guardsman Marbo
Heavy - Manticore

Transports move forward. everything Shoots. Rune Priest mans the Quad Gun, joins a pack of Long Fangs and takes divination. The Chimeras Lead. The Rhinos run behind them. The Thunderwolves tuck close behind to countercharge. If the Chimeras get shot, the Grey Hunters disembark in front to protect the Guardsmens advance. Usually the army dominates the center of the battlefield rather nicely. Only against serious close combat hordes, does this army have to use it's speed in a defensive fashion.

You mention Thunderwolves in your tactics, but not in your list?

Otherwise, it's solid against other footslogging armies. I'm not sure I'd try it against Tau, and I definitely wouldn't try it against Eldar.

Why don't you think the list can take on eldar? My roommate plays eldar so I'll be playing him often...

The friend I play most often runs Eldar, and he takes my Wolves apart pretty readily. Thought, admittedly, I don't have the IG mech support.

New Eldar can be tough, but the trick is not to let them isolate your units. This list can really wreak havoc on the new Wave Serpent spam with mass S7-10 firepower (plasma-guns, melta-guns, rocket launchers, lascannons, the Manticore & Marbo). It's got a lof of anti-infantry firepower as well with the flamers, bolters, lasguns, frag missiles and the manticore if need be. I feel like this would be a touch matchup for a lot of Eldar Armies. It can down bikes and skimmers easily as well as heavy spearheads like wraithguard / wraithlord kinda stuff. The Hunters + Thunderwolf Cavalry are usually adequate to deal with Eldar CC as long as I can avoid getting charged by full squads of Harlies. Maybe you should consider taking some allies, as the Wolf codex is getting sort of dated. Also, what kind of lists are you and your friend running?

I've been slowly building my army, messing around with a few different concepts (we play tabletop and on Vassal, which allows for trying out stuff I'm thinking about buying), but my SW forces are growing pretty slowly, as is - I'm not going to be able to supply my own allies anytime soon, though I also have some deep-seated reluctance to run two-army forces, anyway (mostly for fluff reasons). My friend has a reasonably large and diverse army (I think he's pushing 4k, though it may be 5k), and he tends to run a couple Wave Serpents, a couple jet bike squads (seers and guardians), and a couple units of War Walkers, with some Warp Spiders Deep Striking. His CC is usually Dire Avenger based. He's got an Avatar and has tried out Fuegan, Wraithguard, Wraithlords, and Swooping Hawks. Your IG Mech and shooting may make a lot of difference, relative to what I field, though.
