As you state early game field presence is an issue. The other one being the disparity of when your units hit home. So I can deal with your army piecemeal without making tough decisions.Turn 1 Flyrant are tthe concern. Turn 2 (depending on who went first and how well turn 1 went) Flyrant then Grants. Meaning turn 3 is when I start caring about the Exocrines...

so would i be better to just not worry about devil gaunts at all? i don't like taking such weaking shooting units but apparently numbers are such a huge thing since they die so easily anyways

Well if you drop the gaunts and Hive Commander (and the random Regen) that nets you 550 points. I would split the Zoanthropes into singles.
That's a Dakkafex and 4 units of Warriors with a cannon each. That's another MC and lots more turn 1 board presence.

It depends where he concentrates his fire and what cover save you have. Also remember the Gaunts require synapse baby sitting where as the Warriors provide synapse. You also make his tar getting decisions harder. Does that Riptide shoot one of your MCs or does he try to ID the Warriors.
Whilst the Warriors provide pinning checks on FWs and broadsides and the like to further reduce his firepower and mobility.
