Hey guys, I've recently decided to put my Ultramarines on hold for an army i've ALWAYS wanted to play, the Grey Knights.
I'm a little clueless as what to buy, but so far i've bought the Codex, Coteaz, and a Dreadknight. I plan on running 2 Dreadknights minimum, but unsure where to go from here?
Could I ask the veteran Grey Knight players' opinions for a 1000 and 1500 point list, where a good place to start would be? Thank you. Also i've been reading the Dreadknight is STR7 and T7, my codex reads T6 S6 and I can't seem to find the FAQ for it. Am I missing something?

"For eleven hundred years, I have fought and I have seen the darkness in our galaxy. I have seen the vileness of the alien and the heresy of the mutant. I have witnessed the sin of possession. I have seen all the evil that the galaxy harbours, and I have slain all whose presence defiles the Emperor. I have seen what you will see. I have fought what you must fight, and I have slain what you must slay... so fear not and be proud, for we are the sons of Sanguinius, the protectors of Mankind. Aye, we are indeed the Angels of Death." |

Dreadknights are S6/T6 but strike with S10 nemesis doomfists. Dreadknights are popular either with teleporter and incinerator for a good alpha strike or naked. In a 1000 point game the teleporter is probably too expensive, but you could give them a gun if you wanted.
Coteaz - 100
10 strikes, 2 psycannon, psybolt, justicar with hammer, razorback with psybolt ammo -- 295pts
10 strikes, 2 psycannon, justicar with hammer, psybolt, rhino - 285
Dreadknight, incinerator - 160
Dreadknight, incinerator - 160
This would allow you give your marines and DK some accurate s5-7 fire support and cover while being pretty decent against CC as well.

Is footslogging a big no no with the Knights? I don't necessarily NEED to run Coteaz... I've just never felt so clueless when it came to an army lol.

Footslogging is not a great idea with the relatively short range of the GK weaponry (right around the 24" mark for almost everything). You'll get shot up before you make it across the board.
2 DK's in a 1000 point list is a LOT of points. I'd save the 2nd one for a 1500+ point game.
Coteaz is considerably the best bang for your buck HQ choice at only 100 points. I like Grand Masters as well but they get costly really fast (use for a 1500/2000+ point game perhaps).
Grey Knights are fun, but they are expensive when it comes to their points per model so you're not going to field a lot of them. You need to decide if you want Power Armoured knights, Terminators/Paladins or Inquisitorial Henchmen (or some mix of the above) first. Personally I love the PA knights backed up by DK's and Rifleman Dreds, but it's a preference. The strongest GK lists lately seem to have a lot of henchmen lead by Coteaz (since he makes henchmen troops).

You looking for Pure GK?
Footslogging is your best option...by a lot...I always think...how many turns am I boxing up 20ish S5 stormbolter rounds and not earning my points back...bad idea.
Coteaz and his personal army are nice but they just don't offer the bad@ssery that GKs bring to a table.
You really can't go wrong with pure GK, Paladins, Troop Terminators, Purifiers, Strikers, Interceptors and even Purgators are all very good choices.
When it comes down to it...you an be competitive with whatever flavor you like.
So I say, read up on Purifiers and Paladins, see if the elitest route is where you want to go, otherwise you'll end up taking a mix of Terminators, Strikes, and Interceptors like me and a few other veteran Daemonhunters around here.

Pure GK most definitely... I can't stand allies. I'm really digging Crowe, I love his model! So, do you mind if I pick your brain for a moment? Crowe makes Purifiers troops, how do you suggest I kit them out? I play against a lot of Tau/Eldar/Daemons/Chaos.. lucky me right? I'm going to go tomorrow and buy myself a ton of these badasses and while being uber competitive isn't at the top of my list, I am tired of getting my ass handed to me. One thing is that I am in love with Dreadknights as mentioned earlier... I've already bought two. Could I ask you to brainstorm a 1000/1500 point list with me? I have a 2v2 and a 1v1 next weekend and I'll be going hard to get these guys done. Thanks in advance.

Pure GK = Grey Knights Codex without henchmen.
Thus...more pure than those muddled minded humans.
Crowe is cool, but you have to want to put up with him...as he can't join any other squad. Usually, taking a Grand Master to Grand Strategy him or a personal StormRaven for him becomes necessary.
Dreadknights, without a doubt run them with an incinerator...as game points increase...add a teleporter...and eventually a sword.
Run 2-3 and profit. A squad of interceptors with psybolt ammo and psycannons/incinerators is a good buy. Throw a hammer in there for good measure.
The dreadknights and the interceptors would be the core of your force and are deadly to any enemy.
Purifiers against those enemies? Psycannon Spam...and lots of it...
But personally, I think standard GKT troops will fight alongside dreadknights best.
If you like him, Mordrak is fun and suits the Dreadnight/Interceptor shunt punch as well.

What are we aiming for? 1000?
Here...start with these models.
HQ
-Grand Master (Blind Grenades)
TROOP
-10 Strikers (Psybolt Ammo, 2x Psycannon)
-5 Strikers (Psycannon)
HEAVY
-Dreadknight (Incinerator, Teleport Pack)
-Dreadknight (Incinerator, Teleport Pack)
1000/1000
It's not the strongest 1000 pts you can field...but it fits those dreadknights in the list, and gives them some punch...which I can tell you desperately want.
The best thing I can say about the above though, is that you will always have a use for the models in future lists and higher points.
The Grand Master is the Pinnacle of Grey Knight Awesomeness.

1500 points I wanted to run Draigo:

10x Strikers with
2x Psycannons

A few notes:
Coteaz: is really for those who want to field a lot of the follower / stormtrooper type troops so is not necessary. Some people like spamming those orange monkeys but it seems a little too silly for my tastes.
Crowe is the cost for fielding a lot of Purifiers as troops, they are ideal for facing horde armies for that extra attack on every model you are in melee with. He looks great but is a liability as a character.
The ability to deep-strike is ideal for Tau and especially Eldar to get behind those Waveserpents.
Psi-cannons where possible give the most utility for your shooting.
I found the dreadnaughts with the TL AC with the +1S ammo is also something to think about (4 shots with re-rolls at strength 8!).
Look at a Grey Knight Librarian, there are some things he can help out with Psionic abilities.
I found one dreadknight with the teleport option was a good durable assassin, I am having trouble thinking of 2 of these guys for the points played and still have enough troops for scoring.
Some thought on what to kit out your troops is needed (sword, halberd, 2 swords, staff...). I usually think of what I have the guys do: hold the line/objective = sword, durable but outnumbered = 2 swords, Purifiers = halberds = hit first and usually outnumbered.
The one thing that is common is everything is points expensive so you have to look for the biggest bang for your buck. Foot slogging and firing every step of the way tends to be the way to go.
I envision that the target location is confirmed, they surround it at a distance, unload while advancing, then go into melee to ensure the enemy is truly dead with no means of escape.

Yeah, but the second psycannon on the interceptors is much more vital than the hammer.

Coteaz is not just for henchmen guys, he is a lvl 2 psyker with divination for 100pts with free interception and improve your chance to snatch first turn.
For the list with Draigo, you could also take out the GKSS squad and take some solodins.
For instance :
Draigo
10 Paladins, 4 psycanons
1 solodin
1 solodin
DK, teleporter, heavy incinerator
DK, teleporter, heavy incinerator

I'm running something similar to that now... is the Apothecary just not worth it? I seem to be the only one that likes the idea of a 2+ or 5++ with FNP?

If you have space for the Apothecary, why not? I swear every time I play someone with FNP they roll it successfully like 95% (ok slight exaggeration haha) of the time, and always in the most clutch situations. Great little thing to have though.

Its a decision between another solodin, or Apothecary.

Just remember the Apothecary is +75 points on top of the 55 points so he is straight up 130 which just makes him very costly. If you just math hammer its just better to get 2 more paladins seeing which a lot of AP 1 or 2 stuff that is going to take out Paladins are already Str 8+ which means you are getting ID and being denied FNP and that's why I don't run them and if I did I don't think I would run an apothecary. Paladins are better then terminators point for point in only certain situations:
Eldar S6 AP2
Low Str or Bad AP volume
Plasma Guns
Don't ever run the DK without a personal teleporter or they are just awful. However DK are amazing with PT, Hvy Incin and the Greatsword (+1 attk, reroll all misses, failed to wounds and failed to glance or pen at str 10)
I really like the LRC for GK, all of its guns (minus a multimelta) get +1 str for 5 points combined with psychic pilot its just hands down the best LR in the game aside from FW LR which GKs can't take.
I am also a big fan or ordo malleus inquisitors with termie+psy cannon for a low cost divination HQ. I usually like to a run a LRC with an inquisitor, 6 termies and a techmarine with all the grenades. Techmarine can repair any immobilization or HP lost and when you charge out of that LRC you will more than likely just erase a squad.
It may seem odd, but just like putting a ton of marines on the board is just amazing. GK SS being able to split and also can deepstrike, you could just take like 5 or 6 10 man SS with psycannons and swords in a 1500 point list. Then if you really wanted to be good just take inquisitors then ally inquisition and get a bunch of either terminator inquisitors with presence so they can DS or just a plain naked Xenos Inquisitor for 55 points and have presence.
Sample List:
GK
HQ:
Inq Malleus
Termie, Psy Cannon, Psyker
Inq Xenos
Psyker
Troops:
10 man GKSS 2 psycannons, psybolt, 1 hammer
10 man GKSS 2 psycannons, psybolt
10 man GKSS 2 psycannons, psybolt
10 man GKSS 2 psycannons, psybolt
10 man GKSS 2 psycannons, psybolt
Inquisitor Detachment:
HQ:
Inq Xenos
Psyker, Liber Heresius
Inq Xenos
Psyker
TOTAL: 1500
You can deepstrike 2 squads and they walk around and do wacky fun GK stuff, one with a terminator inquisitor one w.o. Then the other 3 inq just join the other 3 units. You have 4 twinlinked units for almost every tun (sometimes you fail leadership 10).
Each squad can do 16 S5, and 8 S7 or 4 S7 if moved.
Fighting other LR shouldn't be too bad, as the Psycannons can pen armor 14 and you have the volume to do so.

Good point about the apothecary vs. solodins, there aren't a whole lot of AP1/2 weapons that won't instant death them. It is nice to have a backup if you have a few wounds and roll like crap though.
I feel like plenty of people overlook the Power Armor GK lists, you can cram so much firepower into 1500pts it's ridiculous. It's also pretty friggin difficult to take out 50 marines who can split into 10 squads
On a side note, Psycannons are amazing. With the volume of fire they put out and what essentially become auto-pens on AV14 when you glance they are decently effective at killing tanks once you get into range. Just need to roll some lucky 6's.

Very great post and thank you for your sound advice! But I am interested in pure GK only. I know Draigowing isn't overly effective or competitive... But I love Draigo and Paladins and Dreadknights so it's where I wanted to take my first list. This is where I'm at.
Draigo
10 Paladins
4 Psycannons
4 Swords
3 Halberds
3 Hammers
Solodin with Psycannon
2x Dreadknights with Heavy Incinerator, Teleporter, and Great Sword. I know ill struggle against Eldar and Tau but who doesn't? I've played Orks for a long time so I'm used to getting my ass handed to me. But I think this will win me more games than Orks. Automatically Appended Next Post: Very great post and thank you for your sound advice! But I am interested in pure GK only. I know Draigowing isn't overly effective or competitive... But I love Draigo and Paladins and Dreadknights so it's where I wanted to take my first list. This is where I'm at.
Draigo
10 Paladins
4 Psycannons
4 Swords
3 Halberds
3 Hammers

"For eleven hundred years, I have fought and I have seen the darkness in our galaxy. I have seen the vileness of the alien and the heresy of the mutant. I have witnessed the sin of possession. I have seen all the evil that the galaxy harbours, and I have slain all whose presence defiles the Emperor. I have seen what you will see. I have fought what you must fight, and I have slain what you must slay... so fear not and be proud, for we are the sons of Sanguinius, the protectors of Mankind. Aye, we are indeed the Angels of Death." |

I also only run GKs but with Inquisition HQ choices not henchmen since I feel they are very tied with them so I understand your stance. I absolutely hate the "space monkeys" and henchmen list despite them being effective.
Unfortunately though you can't run a solodin with a psycannon. The codex specifically says for every 5 Paladins you can take 2 special weapons so it's properly interpreted as:
1-4 paladins = no psycannons, incinerators, psilencers
5-9 paladins = up to 2 psycannons, incinerators, or psilencers
10 paladins = up to 4 psycannons, incinerators, or psilencers
I also just like to say I strongly agree with taking 2 DK. Every time I run 1 DK I feel it isn' enough and it just get focused down. However 2 really makes a huge difference as it can sort of balance out any unlucky armor saves you may have taken and failed. I generally play 2k so its not hard to get them in but I told myself I will only play 2 DK or 0 as more often then not 1 never does anything against a lot of armies.

Whoops! Thanks for clearing that up for me Well I have 20 left over points. I guess that's enough to give my 10 Pallys Psybolt Ammuntion! Why the hell not lol.
I'm with you, I don't care for the henchmen and etc. non-sense either, although I see how Inquisitors can be useful. I do have Coteaz just never used him yet as i'm not really a WAAC player, I just field the guys I feel are the most bad ass like Draigo.
Yeah I was thinking about a Dreadknight and 2 Psyfleman Dreads but... I don't know. I love the fact I can have 2 huge threats that can possibly be scoring from Draigo in there face by turn 1/2 incinerating Pathfinders and what not (I play against a lot of Tau). I don't know exactly how many W's i'll pull out with this list, but my heart is set on it. Even I win 1/5 i'll be very content.
